Anyone here not White?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I pity most of y'all. There's something to be said for never needing to buy/apply sunscreen or worry about getting burned when you intend to be outside all day....

Uhm... even though we don't burn, we can still get skin cancer like everyone else. How many dark-skinned riders here don't use sunblock?

I'll play.

My mom is Mexican and my dad is Irish (this seemingly incongruous combination is more common than you'd think: see Anthony Quinn, Vicente Fox, Alvaro Obregon, Jeff Garcia, and Zorro.) I have a white name and a brown face. I grew up speaking English and having to take Spanish in college and then language school in Mexico. I can't eat eggs without tortillas and beans. I also love potatoes. Oh, and I cut my own lawn.

Am I white? Am I brown? I guess I'm both.

I'm sorry. Once you're tainted, you lose the privilege of calling yourself white.

Speaking of white... anyone remember the Crayola color called "Flesh"? It was like milky pink—or light peach. I remember being confused by it when I was 8-years-old in Manila. Oh well, it was the right color for He-Man's flesh at least.

There's a Major Taylor team that I see in Prospect Park here in Brooklyn all the time. I was wondering what they were about. I didn't make the connection that they were all black until you mentioned it. PP gets all colors of riders, and you wouldn't know it's a white sport from riding there.

wait a second. sorry to go off topic, but does everybody here use sunblock (regardless of race/skin tone/etc.)? i never use sunblock, and i start the season super pale and end up looking like those rabobank characters by the end of season. i guess i have managed to take in just the right amount of sun to not get burned at all and just tan easily. or maybe it is because i do a lot of my long cruise rides on a tree covered bike trail on my fixie and reduce chances of burning. hmmm.

My mom is white. My dad is Latino. I've never used sunscreen in my life and never have had a sunburn. Maybe I should rethink that strategy.

I am a very white guy who gets a little base tan then can stay outside all day only getting darker and not burning. If I dont get that base tan I burn really bad. Just been a bad habit my whole life and I hate lotions and funky smelling sticky lotions while I am outside sweating anyway. I never use sunblock but wish I could get into the habit. Skin cancer is a big concern. O well I quit smoking 15 years ago. I cant seem to quit the sun.

In my area not all blacks live in the inner city. Hard as it is to believe my neighbor is black and I live in the suburbs.

okie .. forgive me. around here, that this comment is meant to be serious would not have been a surprise. I was [just] curious.

Where were we anyway

(funny, I'm going on a ride with 5 other brothers in a few hours. Isn't this like the "I can't find black people to hire" excuse)

PS: I think IM just recruited couple more white guys

I wear sunscreen pretty religiously, but I still get pretty dark. My mom is really dark and she practically bathes in it. After a summer of golf, she gets these really stark tan lines on her ankles from her socks. Mexican skin is the ultimate tanner.

You need to go on more rides in Antioch CA where cyclists come in so many flavors it's pointless to try and keep track. Diverse area --> diverse cyclists.

For the record, sunblock doesn't stop you from tanning, it keeps you from damaging your skin.

Try walking outside in the blazing sun with SPF30 on one arm, none on the other. See if you notice a difference.
I've heard more than once that any SPF rating over 15 is redundant... I guess the way it works, maximum blocking is achieved at 15. However, I'd love if someone has a technical explanation to back this up.

SPF is the number of hours you'd need to be in the sun to equal one hour unprotected. Thus SPF 15 lets 1/15th of the sun through, or roughly 6%. SPF 30 let's 3% or so. SPF 50, 2%. So there's a diminishing return.

Might not be what you're looking for, but it's all I got.
