Anyone here not White?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What do you mean? My parents are from South Africa but they're White. I just don't see too many African Americans or Brazilians and we know that these people excel in all sports except cycling. Conspiracy? You tell me.

No, really, I don't. Are Hispanic's White? Are Arabs White? Are Sephardi Jews White? Are Spaniards and Portuguese White?

Honestly, I have no idea where you draw the line; skin color or ethnicity.

First, Hispanics/latinos=not a race. So yes, some latinos are white while others are not. I think most people refer to Whites as people of European Descent. So technically everyone listed below CAN be white.

According to the U.S. Census:

http://www.census.gov/population/www...acefactcb.html

OP: If you wanted reasonable responses, you should have made this a poll. Though you still wouldn't get any meaningful data, considering the miniscule sample size and the odd sub-section of the cycling community that this forum represents (example: there are plenty of "non-white" transportational cyclists in Africa and Asia, but how many of them post here?).

I am going to take the OP's question as innocent curiosity.

I've noticed lately that there are a lot more African American roadies around here than there used to be (or seems to be). I'm happy about that.

I have a racial/ethnic curiosity myself... by far the most luminous praise I have received for my ride has come from those of Indian/Pakistani origins yet I never see them on a roadbike. One of these days I have to ask why.

You better pray the same North African dudes who regularly crush marathons and long distance running events don't get together sufficient scratch to pursue the expensive, elitist, fiscally exclusionary sport of road cyling. Because if THAT happens the next 27 Tour de France winners will be friggin Kenyan. They would not be white men.

The last time I checked all you needed to start running was your feet.

I do nominate 'black men can't cycle' for the August BF Clue Store Award (as in you seem to need a trip there).

As far as science and DNA testing has been able to determine we all are the decendants of one man who lived in Africa about 60,000 years ago. So based on this we are all black. I think that the DNA testing showed that there were about 4 areas on earth that the mothers DNA comes from. So I guess that the female DNA has mutated 4 times since the male DNA mutated. Does this mean that females are just a bunch of mutants or could they really be more advanced?

I am not white, but to the point of wondering why cycling is mostly a gringo sport, I tend to think of it as a peer thing. Most kids, when they're growing up, tend to play the sports that their friends and peers play. Roadies, in my experience, tend to have a suburban upbringing (since that's where it's easiest and safest to ride a bike) and until recently, most suburbs were white enclaves. Kids who live in the city play basketball, soccer and other games that can basically be played in a converted parking lot.

Check again in two or three generations, after the ethnic/iimmigration transformation of American suburbs has had a chance to settle in.and I'm pretty sure that you'll see a fair number of Asian, South Asian and Latino kids joining the ranks.

.... but, yeah, I wouldn't have gotten into cycling if I didn't start dating white chicks ...
