clicking noise, need help
 

I bought a new carbon TT bike about a week and a half ago, Ive got about 200 miles on it so far, and the derailleurs need adjusting as expected, but on the last two rides it has developed a clicking noise that seems to be coming from the crank area. Im pretty sure it is not derailleur related. Crank is a shimano 105, the pedals are SPD-SL, bar end shifters with 105 FD and dura-ace RD. Its a clicking noise that only comes on the downstroke of the crankside pedal and only happens on the downstroke. Does not happen if I only pedal with the left foot clipped in, and gets worse if I am out of the saddle climbing, also does not happen if I only pedal lightly. Any help, or suggestions are very greatly appreciated. And yes I bought this online so I am trying to avoid the stare of death taking it into the LBS (but also the charge as I maxed myself out buying the bike).

Grease threads on BB and re-install making sure it's in there good and tight.

If you bought new online, did you bring it to your LBS for a tune up after assembly?

I had mine take the BB/crank out and check BB grease, just to make sure it was lubed
he trued my wheels, and adjusted everything, well worth the $32

Not all LBS's are evil, mine was very impressed with my ebay special.. yours maybe too.

Well I bought from a place that does the build and basically ships the bike so that all you need to do is put the wheel, seatpost, and bars on, so I am (perhaps naively) assuming that they would have properly built the bike. Also it was perfect for the first two rides, so would I be wrong to think that it wouldn't need more grease that soon? Would a badly installed/ greased BB make noise on only one side of the BB?

Before you take apart the BB, make sure your cleats are tight.

Sounds like a BB/Crank problem. I broke two FSA cranks with the exact same symptoms. Trek/Lemonde upgraded me to a 105 crank and I haven't had problems since.

if its a 5600 series crank,10 spd, then yes one side could make noise and not the other. the BB spindle is one piece incorporated with the drive side crank the bearing cups mount outboard of the BB tube and the drive side may not have enough grease. Are the pedals new? and were the spindle threads greased? a pedal that has low grease will start to make clicking or creaking sounds under pressure. The third thing I would rule out is your saddle a click from a loose bolt or rail can project downward.

Pedals were bought new with the bike, so that may be it, and I can feel the click in my shoe. I didnt add any grease to the pedal out of the box, so maybe that is it. Cleats are out because it only does it on one bike, as is saddle because it gets worse when I am standing/pedaling. I will try switching pedals and see if that fixes it, if not I guess it's going into the shop.

I have experienced a similar noise if the rear derailer does not have enough spring tension. I think it is trying to shift by itself when you create a lot of chain tension by pedaling hard. Pretty easy to try.

Ive had two instances of clicking on two different bikes. Bike one had a faulty drive side bottom bracket cup bearing. Replaced the bearing cups and it went away. The second was caused by the bottom bracket flex on the downward stroke of the drive side where the front derailleur was being touched slightly by the chain. Good luck in finding your clicking because I know how much I hated it.
