Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chain issues

Hola all,
I am the proud owner of a used 1999 Kona Kapu (full Ultegra components).

She was well used, but I have access to a bike shop, so a clean up/fix up operation helped her out quite a bit.

Anyway, the chain is about 80% done according to the gage, and I was wondering if this is perhaps the reason that in certain gear combinations it has hard time staying on the rear cassette when I stand on the pedals.

Going to get a new one anyway, but just wondering if this will alleviate that, or if it is something else entirely.

Sounds more like the cassette's worn. Is it skipping over the teeth?

Yeah it's skipping cog's entirely. If I downshift it'll hover over a cog trying to engage and then just skip it and go down one more.

I figured the cassette needs replacing too (riding with a worn chain will do it..eh?).

+1 - if ridden for a long time with a worn chain the cassette may be worn out. If you buy a new cassette be sure to get a new chain as well.

Try without shifting. Can you make it skip just by putting the hammer down ? If so it is definitely a worn cassette, which usually goes along with a worn chain.

If just while shifting, it could be something else or a combination of the two. 10-speed shifter on 9-speed cassette? I've seen that happen, throws don't match up.

If the chain is skipping entire cogs then it sounds like the tension in your shifter cable needs to be adjusted.

Yeah it is definitely only when I'm 'throwing the hammer down'.

I'll check the tension after I put on the new cassette and chain.

Thanks all.

+1 - OP - Adjust the gearing correctly first. Then figure out whether or not you need a new cassette. Simple to do before throwing out money.

I thought the OP works in a bikeshop and the issue was more than just the barrel adjuster? OP are you making schtuff up?

I have access to a bikeshop, I'm a retail **** who sells the bikes and have been learning about bike maintenance for the past few months and volunteering at a community bike shop project in detroit as a mechanic.

I've adjusted the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur after running new drivetrain cables. I adjusted it because of other drive train problems (like an incredible clicking in the rear derailleur when i was using the 11T cog).

One more question...

Apparently I can't order a 9spd ultegra 11-23 cassette from Shimano anymore. Only 10spd ultegra now.

Just to verify, all I would have to change for an upgrade to 10spd would be rear de, cassette, and chain?

If you can't get Ultegra- Go for dure ace, 105 or even Sora. They will all work if they are 9 speed. Just see what is available.
