Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fun first, fitness second. 2 hours in the gym is like work, but 2 hours on a bike is like a mini-vacation.

If you make this a poll, you may get more responses. I also agree with AirBeagle1 on the "Fun" category.

Fun. I would ride if it was not healthy. Its the only type of excersise that I have ever done without bieng bored after 20 minutes.
One of the coolest feelings however was when I went into a charity race a few months ago.It was the first organised competitive activity I had done since schooldays. When I was 'racing' through the built up areas people were lined in the streets at 6:30 am cheering us on.It was such a great feeling to have strangers encouraging you and clapping that I could understand pro athletes getting a rush about competing.

You can't compete without fitness.

Both I guess.

I ride for greater fitness and mental health Cycling has been my outlet for years. Something about the road that can erase a bad day. I do enjoy racing occasionally, but it's not the sole reason why I ride a bike.
