Any bike testing mishaps?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any bike testing mishaps?

I am new to road cycling and have been test riding several different bikes in the past few weeks.

A week ago I decided to test ride a Felt F4. The LBS guy was super nice and spent quite a long time fitting me to the right bike.

So, I take off down the road and about half a mile into the ride I start hearing and feeling a noise as if the back tire was rubbing on something. I start slowing down to stop and check it out then, BOOM! Part of the rear tire blows off of the rim. It was loud and I almost crapped my shorts.

Good thing the bike was light becasue I had to carry it all the way back to the shop. No damage at all was done to the bike/rim- thankfully.

The LBS guy was very apologetic. He said that the tube had been pinched when the tire was originally put on. He fixed it up and sent me back out. No harm, no foul.

You mean like the time I got the tire caught in the sewer grill (and almost lost it) because it was my first time riding a road bike? Or trying to bunny hop (hard to do on a tall thin bike) onto the curb to get away from a crazy driver who got close to me and pressed the gas to scare me? Or when I was screaming "Ow ow no shocks!! no shocks!! AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!" (torn up street) as I went over a bunch of potholes? I promptly returned that bike to the LBS owner who was high as a kite. It was the test ride from hell. He pumped up the tires to 120 and gave it to me with no pedals. I had to ask for pedals to ride it.

That experience almost stopped me from buying a road bike. I was just too freaked out.

That's hilarious. Glad you weren't hurt.

If you crash and do damage to a bike during a test ride who is responsible for the cost of the repairs?

Anyone have an experience where the bike is damaged?

I told the guy about my near death experiences and he just laughed and told me that he'd give me $100 off if we bought two (two of us where shopping). I asked him if I hurt the bike and he said that there was no way I hurt it and he set it aside for me to buy. He didn't even look at it. He was waaaaaaaay out there.

Road bikes have shocks...they're called your legs. Though I can understand if maybe the first time out you didn't want to stand on the pedals.....

Glad you pressed forward and got a road bike after that.

Yeah....I was using my legs but I'm used to full suspension. Totally different experience. I was used to blasting over holes and bumps and it being smooooooooooth as butter. *shrugs*

As with anything really, your responsible. Unless the bike wasn't properly configured.

Say you get hit by a car and it wasn't your fault. You can sue the car driver and satisfy the bike shop for their loss. But if its a hit and run and the jerk is never found; your **** out of luck.

Its your responsiblity.
