Changing ISIS BB to Shimano Holotech

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Changing ISIS BB to Shimano Holotech

I've got a 2003 Fuji Cross that currently uses an ISIS BB. I'm getting a compact crankset and am looking at the Shimano R600 (https://probikekit.com/display.php?code=M8888). I've never switched out a BB before and wanted to know there is any compatibility issues with a frame, or if the Shimano will fit right into the BB shell on the frame. (PS: I know the Shimano requires the external cups and they are currently included in a package deal from pbk.)

Thanks!

You shouldn't have any issues with the frame (both are English thread), but you'll likely need the BB area re-faced for the new bearing cups.

I was actually looking at this same upgrade (I have a TruVativ Elita ISIS triple that came with my bike), and wanted to make sure I knew all the changes I might have to make:

- Adjust the front derailleur
- Replace the whole crankset/BB with the R600 set
- Adjust the chain?

When you mention refacing the BB area, what exactly would that entail? Thanks.

At this point, get a proper manual to do this or get a shop to do this.
BB refacing takes an expensive tool, not worth buying for an individual.
The chain will have to be shortened, the front deraileur will have to be changed for a compact-specific deraileur.

Facing is probably not needed, but better safe than sorry.

Maybe not, I use an ultegra FD on my FSA compact and I don't have huge problems with my chain falling of. I do have some problems, but with the right screw adjustments I'm ok.
