suggestions on things to do while I heal

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

suggestions on things to do while I heal

Well, I'm not going into a 3 page explanation of what happened but I broke my damn leg riding my mountain bike at 6am this morning. Might need pins...hurts like hell...blah blah blah.

So, what can I do to stay in reasonable shape for UP TO 3 months? I already was lifting weights. I have even thought about doing a few one legged rides throughout the week. Nothing big...just a few miles each day. I've done 1 legged drills in the past and can maintain about 17mph in the flats really pushing it.

I'm wondering if the doctor can install a cleat on the bottom of my cast....

Man, this sucks though because I had Mt. Mitchell this weekend, 2-3 full century rides next month (one timed) and a 12 hour MTB race.

Guess I'll just go to the beach condo with my girlfriend over near Traverse City instead.

but also be in race shape? Need to figure out a cardio workout. I see the specialist on Wed. We will see if I need pins or not. My sports medicine doctor says he thinks it is a 15% chance I will. He showed me the x-rays. It was interesting.

Perhaps you could get a rowing machine? I love that workout. Works the arms, legs, and back quite well.

It you get a fiberglass cast you could try swimming. No joke. One of the guys on my Highschool swim team had knee surgery and trained all season in a fibergalss cast. He got it off just before the League championship meet and smoked everyone in the 50 freestyle. He went on to win the 50 in the Los Angeles city meet. City championship for the school which would not have happened without him.

Sorry to hear you are busted up. You didn't say if you will be in the cast the whole time. If not, swimming might be an option.

The fiberglass cast has nothing to with swimming or not. It's the padding we put underneath. There's special (and more expensive) cast padding that doesn't hold water.

Where exactly did you break your bones? Got some xrays to put up? I'd think you'd probably need a plate and screws. Not many things fixed in legs with just pins.

I saw it last weekend. I thought it was weak overall with many plot holes that should have been filled.

You are right. I need a plate with screws. Getting a 2nd opinion on Thursday morning. If they agree, surgery on Friday.

I broke my fibula right near where it attaches to the ankle. The doctor "thinks" I might have ligament damage on the other side and suggests a plate to keep everything lined up. He said I could just have it put in a cast and take the chance that everything would be lined up and i wouldn't get arthritis 20 years from now or get a plate and have less of a chance. Plus, he said with a plate my recovery overall would be the same but I wouldn't have to be in a cast but more like a boot and be able to have some mobility in the leg in 2 weeks vs 4.

no x-rays but I could get them on Thursday before I go for preop.

what part of this post did you and others not understand?

"So, what can I do to stay in reasonable shape for UP TO 3 months? "

harry potter books, watching TV, playing xbox and other crap isn't going to cut it.

Besides, I will be back at work 1 day after surgery.

If you already lift weights, circuit training is a good way to keep your heart rate up while lifting and hopefully not lose some of your cardiovascular fitness.

A lot also depends if you can put pressure on your foot or not, it doesn't sound like it. Swimming might be good though, ask your doctor.

Depending on how cute your girlfriend is I can think of a number of options.

Pretty realistic rendering of our future I think. Except maybe for the main plot line.

For sure. Some of the most realistic (and different) action sequences I have ever seen though. One thumb up. Hey, if I want plot I rent David Mamet.
