A new carbon fiber framed bike for $2-3000

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A new carbon fiber framed bike for $2-3000

I have just started to investigate my options. For my 50th B-day in 45 days I thought I would get a new road bike as my Sertta is now 17 years old.
Does not need to be high end grouppo as technology moves along so quickly so Ultegra is OK.

What do you people on BF suggest I test ride?

Trek Madone.

You might still be able to find deals on the 2007 5.2's; I got mine two Saturdays ago for $2200. Full Ultegra with a Dura-Ace rear derailleur.

with a top limit of $3k and being okay with Ultegra (which is a great group) you really will find a lot of great options.

My LBS is offering full Ultegra for $2,100 (this season's Madone) I test rode the 08 Madone at Palo Alto Bicycles last week and it was very nice.

That's what I thought when I test rode the Madone. And so I bought it. I could have test rode more bikes, but the Madone is more than enough bike for me and the price was right. I keep marveling over the stiffness of the frame. And the '08s are supposed to be even stiffer. The power transfer is much more direct than anything I've ever ridden on before. After 9 years on an entry level, flexy, steel road bike with an aluminum fork, I decided it was time.

...the Missus was a bit surprised though...

Bike shops have been closing out the 2007 Trek Madone 5.2's for $2000. If you can still find one, that's a bargain price for a very nice bike. The 2008 Madone is nicer, but costs around $3500.

or build a bike, pick up a frameset like a Look 555/565 and add your own grouppo, wheelset, and saddle.

Scott CR1. Not that I'm biased or anything (I've had mine for what, a couple of months now?).

Go take a look at what Fuji's your local Performance has. Near or more than half off 06 models, especially the higher end ones.

I just went through the same thing - although it's 40th birthday for me not 50th.

I decided to go full carbon, Ultegra, more relaxed geometry given all factors.

Everything I rode was great - so I knew it was going to come down to specific fit, LBS and ultimately the real factors: bling and wow factor.

Here's what I rode-tested: Lemond, Cannondale Synapse, Guru custom, Serotta Ti/Carbon, Scott CR1, Specialized Roubaix, Trek Madone, Bianchi c2c 928, Giant OCR. Didn't test ride the Orbea Onix although I wanted to.

I bought a Cannondale Synapse Carbon 1. Why? Fit was really great for me, I was sold on the user reviews about the 'alchemy' of the Synapse frame. I found the black color cool. And most of all I really liked the LBS. Almost bought the Scott given bling although I didn't like the LBS and it didn't seem like it'd be as comfortable at mile 50 of a ride.

My old bike was almost 15 years old -- the technology has advanced so much. I really love my new bike.

Good luck!

I'm awfully pleased with my '06 Specialized Tarmac Expert with full Ultegra. If I'd kept shopping I probably would've gotten sidetracked with a Scott, perhaps a Trek Madone, a Giant TCR, or maybe an Orbea. I have no regrets as to what I purchased though - it's a spectacular bike.

Road Bike Action just did a nice review of the Ibis Silk Carbon; really liked it. $3000 for Ultegra and Easton.

It might be more in line with the great ride of your Serotta.

I rode Madone, Tarmac and eventually settled on a 07 Roubaix Expert with the SRAM Rival group. Haven't had it too long but was definitely the most comfortable and best fit for me of the ones I tried. Also, picked it up on sale for $2,499 at the LBS...

You've got a great budget at up to $3000; shop till you drop.
I'm biased. Go with a Pinarello Prince... Okay, you'll need to spend a bit more.

I was in my local Trek dealer today and they had the Discovery branded Madone 5.2 for $1999. I really wish I was in the market for a new bike because I would give that bike a serious look for that price.

While everyone is recommending good bikes it would really help to know what type of riding you plan to do. As some have stated and I would have suggested, the Madone is a GREAT buy for the money right now if your looking for a aggressive/race type geometry, the Roubaix Expert is also a GREAT buy IMO and can be set up in multiple ways to allow you to be as aggressive or relaxed as you want.

I'm no expert but I'm very happy with my Giant OCR C2. Full carbon, ultegra components. List is $2300. When I looked it seemed to have lots of bang for buck. Mine's an '06 w/ a triple. The '07 and '08 have a compact double. Good luck. I think the '08 has SRAM rival components.

2 out of my 3 bikes have "race geometry" for aggressive riding. I have my saddle on all 3 bikes 3-4 cm above the the bars as this old guy still has some flexibility in the lower back and hamstrings.
My vintage bike's geometry was once considered "race steep" but is more like a touring bike by modern standards.

I am looking for a racing bike to do my training rides. I am not of the Rivendell philosophy.
