Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The dogs around here provide great interval training, especially the ones in the middle of a dead-end road. They always know I'm coming back and are waiting for me.

Most dogs are not interested in biting; they just want to drope the hamer on you.

I had one dog on my route tear a hole in my sock trying to get me. I talked with the owners and they now keep the dog contained. But before they could contain the dog I started getting off the bike and the dog would always back down. I had much rather be on solid ground when confronting a dog with my pepper spray in hand and the bike between me and the dog. I have another dog that wants to come out and chase and just bark. This dog caused me to crash about a year ago and the other day I fell when trying to get off the bike when he came chasing after me. I have talked with the owner and he is not going to do anything about the dog. He even thinks that I am antagonizing his dog by getting off the bike and walking by instead of just riding by. It wont be too long before the dog becomes road pizza but I am planning on talking the the sherriff just to see what they can do for me. Maybe if I can get things documented someone will be moved to make some changes. When I had the first crash I got the state police to write up the crash report. A lot of people think that dog chases are just fun and sprint practice and all this bull but when one of their kids or love ones gets hurt by a dog their attitudes usually change. One of the cities in my state has started charging a fee to all who own a dog and if you own more than 3 dogs you are considered a breeder and have to pay a large fee. If dog owners don't wise up and start keeping their dogs under control then I expect more of these type laws going into effect.

I got this advice from local riders, because it comes up a lot with local ranch and farm dogs. I've only heard of one guy that has had to smack an agressive dog with the bike to keep it off him.

The other ideas sound useful as well. Be careful, especially if it is a big dog.
I think this is the best advice. I do exactly the same thing. Where I live I have to deal with lots of dogs and experience has taught me the exactly same thing: getting OFF the bike and putting it between me and the dog gets rid of them almost instantly.

Ouch! Pitbulls I'm afraid of. The good thing is that those darn dogs can't run fast enough.

I had a chaser a couple of weeks ago, I saw him from quite aways off, when he noticed me coming, he got down into the attack position so I knew what was coming....
when I got closer to him, I moved out into the lane a bit (after a shoulder check of course) to give a bit more room and he bolted after me. So up, out of the saddle, and away I go. He didn't follow long.

My bigger concern is that this is probably the most popular road ride in the city where there are plenty of less experienced (not that I'm a pro or anything) cyclists using this road who could easily get startled by this dog and crash or veer into traffic **cringe**

In the many rides I've made out that way though, I've only seen him out loose twice. **knock on wood**

what the hell is that little box? an ultrasonic mosquito? a golfing range finder? an automatic garage dooor opener? probably would not stop a seriously angry dog as well as this would:

No sympathy for stray, aggressive dogs.

I love dogs, but when I was rather young I was attacked by a stray Rottweiller. 1 Ambulance ride, 48 stitches to the back of the head, and 1 rabies test passed. Thankfully no lasting physical impression (aside from small visible scars).

I would not hesitate to churn a loose and aggressive dog into pooch-pulp, if the need arose.
Granted I'd need to buy a new bike afterwards...

+1 on the water bottle. has always worked, its free, and it doesn't hurt the dog. plus its sort of a guilty pleasure to watch the confused look on their face when they stop dead in their tracks. just remember to ride away after you squirt.

Its an ultrasonic speaker that annoys the dogs with a screeching sound that humans can't hear
I don't think it would stop a truly aggressive dog that would maul a person, but those are uncommon. It has the same effect as a water bottle (ie dog shuts up, looks confused, and usually walks away) but it is instant and good for very long distance

I view Halt with some suspiction because it's impossible to know how it feels to them. Dogs are pack animals that evolution has taught to mask their weaknesses lest they should be attacked. They usually only yelp when something really hurts - or they're trying to con you into doing something for them.
Thanks for encouraging dogs to chase cyclists. Did Pavlov give you this idea? Dog chases cyclist, dog gets a treat so dog chases cyclists to get treat.

How selfish are you? You get away by training dogs to chase the rest of us. Gee thanks.

Even if dogs only want to play they are a threat. Hitting a dog at 25mph is going to hurt and most dogs are unpredictable at best when they are chasing you. Call animal control because no dogs are allowed to be nusance animals and most places have leash laws. It's a shame that we can't deal with the irresponsible owners instead of putting down the simple dogs but ultimately the dogs must be stopped.

If I didn't post these types of questions how would guys like you show off your wit, unending knowledge of past posts and search capabilities.

You know what would be really great? If someone put together a new to the forum FAQ sticky that had all the questions listed that I've been Criticized for posting. Maybe I'll put together a best of thread some day that has all my newbie questions with answers and links to other threads.

I am quilty. My little dog (minature schanuzer), Jaeger will chase bikers, but only up to the curb, he will NEVER go out into the street. I have taught him well.
But even so, cyclist get scared as hell, and if I am out there and see it, I always say I'm sorry.
It is the owners fault, I agree, but he is a tiny dog and can barely reach your ankle at the 12:00 position of the crank even if he did chomp.
I had a bull mastif chase me one time on a country road...that big dog was fast. Here after much initial ferocious barking, he was a ***** cat who just wanted to be petted. The owner came out and apologized while we laughed at this huge baby huey licking our faces.

I love dogs, I have 5, but I will pepper spray a dog chasing me in a heartbeat. I am a Bike Patrol cop and am also an OC instructor. I have been sprayed several times, and it sucks, but the effects last a short time. If the dog owner wont secure the dog or teach it not to chase bikes, then I will assist him or her.

I have been charged by a few dogs and it's scary. I fear they are going to bite me or atleast knock me off my bike. Usually they snap at the tires. There isn't much to do. I told an owner once to keep a better grip on their dog because there is a leash law. I was a little more harsh though.
