20 miles in one hour flat...personal best

Okay, for some of you pros, that may not be a big deal, but it's my best to date. I have no idea where I got the energy to ride 20 miles in one hour flat, I really don't. I just got off work at 7am after a 12hr shift in the E.R., barely got in 2-3hrs sleep yesterday before going in, and ate like a mouse last night over the course of my shift. And this isn't some flat course either, a good many hills, and a fair amount of time out of the saddle (if anyone knows how/where I could plot my course for elevation, etc. I would be glad to share my route).

Anyway, I just wanted to share my joy. :D

Done, thanks for the info, and here it is (it's by no means mountainous, but it is hilly):

Looks like maybe 1000 feet of climbing. I'd be happy to be able to ride that route in one hour flat. Good job! Where there any lights or stop signs to slow you down?

I did 30 miles in 1.5 hours for the first time on Thursday night. The course has 300' or less of elevation change so it is not as hille. Even though it is rural there are quite a few stop signs.

This is my typical 35 mile route:

Did a threshold ride the other day in 1 hour and 45 min flat. Averaged 20.1 mph, and 182 watts, with 1,300 feet of climbing. Not terribly hilly, but not flat.

20 mph for an hour is excellent, especially solo!

But for a little perspective, H.L. Cortis made the hour record of 20 miles, 300 yards in 1882, on a bike like this

He had a cadence of 120.

Doper :D

is far better than 20 flats in one mile.

ridethecliche 08-18-07 03:51 PM

Hahaha +1 (to the doper thing)

jschen 08-18-07 03:53 PM

Congrats.

I still haven't done 20 miles in an hour (not counting long descents, of course).

Thanks. There were no lights, but I crossed HWY15N twice, and have to stop to cross safely, and every crossroads has a stop sign, but some of those I can cruise through as I have a pretty good line of sight for what's coming in all directions, but I do of course have to slow regardless. Now that I have established what I would consider a good solid baseline, I can work to improve my time over that particular course. With a bit better prep sleep and nutrition-wise, and now some motivation, I feel certain I can beat that time.

I'm going to do my first solo century ride (103 miles) next month in Birmingham, AL, ( http://bhambikeclub.org/century2007/century.htmlso) so I really need to be concerning myself with more distance rides between now and then. I might start doing this loop 2-3times for a better distance workout.

No lights or stop signs? Lucky. I could probably knock off a minute or two on my route by not having to slow down if I didn't have to stop.

You also might want to consider changing up your routes, as you'll burn yourself out doing the same loop 2-3 times in one day.

Good for you. I think that is pretty impressive given 1000' or so feet of asent.
I was pretty pleased to be able to do an 10 mile out and back course(20 miles total) in 1 hour the other week. There were two highway overpasses .... we call those hills here in Fl.
