Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Happy Newbie takes the plunge....

I've been lurking and learnin and posting and have just taken the plunge with a modified road bike with flat bars. I started looking at hybrids and after a LOT of research, a LOT of long test rides and a LOT of help from you folks here (thank you, thank you) I settled on a Giant FCR1-w which I got a pretty good deal on from a wonderful LBS. I am steering dangerously close to ecstasy on this thing! It's got a lot of road bike feel but skips the drop bars. I like scenery and speed! And I like the bar extensions that the FCR provides. The ride couldn't be smoother. It's a revelation and I owe a special thanks to those of you road bikers who gave such good advice in various and sundry posts. Especially: Moose, Bill Kapuan, dynarider, Bob Ross, Yen, oilfreeandhappy, slyjackson, mikepop, sonatainFsharp (hello Minnesota, I'm a Carleton grad),, powerglide, and retrogrouch.... I found all that advice really useful.
For me, I totally get it with the hybrids, but I did want that speed. i also wanted durability and some simplicity so I switched out the clip-on pedals for well-built dimensions (hope to have the bike for decades so I got the good kind), and traded out the 28 tires for some 32 reflectors since I ride a fair bit at night on country roads and these are puncture resistant.
Now I've got to figure out a rear rack pack. Any suggestions?
And a good lock? I'm kinda freaked out about that whole ball point pen thing, but if I'm going to ride this bike as much as I want I will need a lock to expand this universe.
Thanks everybody.
what a joy!
