How can you tell the year of a used bicycle?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How can you tell the year of a used bicycle?

Hello, I am rather new to road biking, and I am looking at a used Devinci Chicane for $500. I have read that it is a decent entry level bike. I was wondering if there is anyway to tell what year the bike is? It looks just like this one on their website: https://www.devinci.com/anciensite/english/chic.html except for a little scratching around the seatpost and a paint chip here and there.

If the components are original, you can estimate the age of the bike from the features of the components. Shimano makes significant changes to their component groups every few years.

What brand/model are the components, especially the shift levers? Does it have indexed shifters? Where are the shift levers located? How many cogs does the freewheel or cassette have?

The shifters are Shimano Sora Flight Deck Triple. The shift levers are on the inside of the brake levers. The brake levers shift down. The rear derailler is Shimano Tiagra, the front says Shimano Sora. The cassette has 9 cogs. The rear hub says Shimano FH 2200. I am guessing that the components are mostly the same as listed on the web page with the picture.

Must be very recent. I've never a seen a bike with Sora shifters and a 9 speed cassette before.

The specs say it has an 8 speed cassette.......

If it's the one pictured then it's the 2005 model. You find this out by going on the Devinci site then scroll down the list in the bottom left hand corner to the 2005 section, click on route, then Chicane.

alot of bike sites have archives of old bikes on there website. Specialized has to 02, felt about the same, Marin, to 01, ect. Normally they at least change the decals from year to year.

Call the company. Often the frame paint color or scheme will let them identify the year. OR go to a dealer that sells the brand, they may help you with more info. My LBS has a big file of old bike company catalogs.

That is how I figured out what year my Allez was. That bike you have there looks like a 2005, check it out.

It's an '05. I have a 2001 or 2002 Devinci Santiago with flat bars and have loved riding it! I think they make a solid frame..all hand done in Ontario, Canada..nice welds!

If you can get a decent price, go for it! I think the Chicane was (not in the lineup anymore) the lowest end of their aluminum road bikes, but pretty much same frame as the next level or 2 up.

Good luck!
