All things being equal, in terms of quality, durabity, affordability etc... I would choose a quiet hub over a loud one every day of the week. Realize that my wants and desire in a bike are not the same as the next guy, I'm not egaged in a hammerfest, criterion, or even the more serious style group rides. I generally ride alone or with a small group, I don't need to signal my biking prowess to the poor shmuck whose wheel I'm riding (which I wouldn't be anyway).
Try to think of scenic country roads, rolling vistas of Pennsyvania farmland with bambi and thumper gently hopping to and fro. I've just finished a nice 12% grade and I'm coasting down the opposite slope enjoying the break before the next hill (there's no shortage around here) The I don't want the the click-click-click of the freewheel to be the baclground noise for this, its my bike, I want a quiet freehub. I don't want to be the costantly babying it with special balms and potions, I want a freehub that is quiet to begin with. If all it takes is an application of grease or oil once a year, I can live with that, but don't see why I should have too.
