Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OK, I like to suffer OTB in silence and totally shun Lakewood Nancy-guys, so we should be cool.

Mr. Where-the-hell-did-you-come-from. (AKA The Stalker) One solo ride a guy latched on to my wheel I don't know where he came from, just looked and there he was. Don't know how long he was there, and he didn't say anything just kept on my wheel.

Mr./Ms. Fast Twitch (a close relative of Mr./Ms. Forget-the-warmup): Arrives with pockets brimming with carbohydrates, Sprints for the green lights, cruises up the first climb in the big ring cuz that's how you wake up the guads, burns up a gel in no time flat, and suffers hard despite much work "learning to spin." S/he does not know the meaning of "recovery heart rate zone" or "base miles" and is completely perplexed by Mr Slow and Steady ["He's sportin' the steel frame with the ol' triple crank, always the last up the hill and maintains the same speed throughout the whole ride... but he's completed numerous centuries with no problems and can basically ride forever."]

I got one of those on a ride up the river here. I didn't mind as, although I seemed to be punching a (pretty big) hole in the wind for him, I was turning off not too much later, so he'd have to deal with clean wind himself.

I have latched onto a couple other riders, though, just because they seemed to be keeping a pace close to my own at the time. I always try to say something (the last lame-o remark I made was, "What's two riders in a row? The world's smallest peloton..").

Yeah, well the funny thing is, that I've been that guy lots of times. I have a Superflash ziptied to the back of my helmet and for awhile I kept cutting it off on Saturday mornings for fear of being called a Fred. After awhile, I was like "Screw it, this is a waste of time and zip ties."

Me - The kid who started the year as a poser kid with a mushroom helmet and had trouble keeping up with the 'B' group ride. Now, he's able to outsprint and outclimb most of the 'A' group. He can pull like a devil and will offer a 'Madison Push' if he see's you struggling.
The bike shop owner who runs the rides rues the day that he declined the kid when asked for a spot on his shop team.

Mr. Genetic Freak/Weirdo: The guy who always shows up on a completely inadequate bike and rides to the left of the paceline out in the wind "for the extra workout" but somehow keeps up. Hardtail mountain bike with knobbies and a ludicrous-sized big ring, fixed gear track bike with no brakes or water bottles.

That's me.

Oh, and Mr. Beep: The guy who's zone training with his HRM and is constantly above or below his zone, forcing the rest of us to enjoy an incessant "beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, silence, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep beep"

Mr. Unobtrusive - Older heavyset guy, okay bike and boring kit, not very fast, pulls when he can, gets dropped sometimes, never close to winning a sprint, chats with the chatty, keeps quiet with the quiet, always manages to get behind a woman in the paceline then spends a long time sureptitiously staring at her caboose...

Wait. Did I say that out loud?

The second guy is me.

Stranger in a group ride-Rides/trains with you, but, when you both race together, halfway through the race passes you and taunts you, doesn't look so smug as you pass him two miles from the finish line-did three races with this guy.

Mr. new to the group, b rider. Gets to a faster group ride and ups the pace at the start, five miles later he's droped and no-one cares 'cos he acted like an ass

How about the Mr.'s who welcome a new rider to a no-drop "A" ride, then make fun of him/her all ride, because he .. well, is new, and he hangs back so as not to mess with the "pros" on their training/recovery ride; he pulls when his/her turn comes up and drops most uphills.

Not me. Well, I'm not one of the Mr.'s.

I really don't think Greg cares much mate

What jersey do you wear so i can spot you next wednesday? I only have 1 jersey, black and white. Look for me before the hills seperate me and the rest of the B's from the A's

I hope there's some sarcasm......

Find a new A group. No matter what, when you reach the top of one group you are still at the bottom of another. And don't talk yourself up. People hate it and if you are in a handicapped race, you'll be harshly handicapped.

Hahahah. I always feel like I should be making gear combo suggestions to this guy. "Pardon me sir, why don't you try shifting up a couple gears, it might quiet your bike down".
