Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

bontrager xxx lite carbon tubular 16??? spokes?

Hey, I just bought a set of Bontrager tubular wheels, I can't find them anywhere on any website, They are supposed to be the xxx lite, which normally come with 20spokes front, 24 spokes rear, however these wheels have only 16 (bladed) spokes front and the same on the rear.
Does anyone know what kind of wheel this is? They have no decals, the Hubs say race x lite and are all black. I was told that they were from a sponsored team. I like them and they are stiff enough for me at135lbs.
They are the same depth as the Zipp 303.
Any help or information would be appreciated, thanks.

Maybe these? https://www.bontrager.com/Road/Wheelw...eels/23136.php a XXX tubi rim with a "plastic flange" to extend the rim...The 303 is 38mm though.

That's what I was thinking.
Did Bontrager make a xxx lite carbon tubular aero rim, tubular, with 16 spokes front and rear.
Also, do the xxx lites have "race x lite written on the hub?

I highly doubt xXx lites would say X on the hub...

Sounds like you have some old model X lites.

Believe me, you can't mistake the xxx lites from the x lites.....you'd know it by the price you paid.

Plus I think the triple Xs have carbon hubs and the Xs have the same alloy hub that is used in all the Bonty Race Lite series (other than the xXx).

Correct...but both offer real nice hubs.

Didn't they just start using the carbon hubs?
Mine are supposedly 2006, with the black hubs.

The carbon X-lites were the predecessor to the XXX-lite wheels. I believe XXX lite was introduced in 2005. Starting in 2006, the went from alloy to carbon hubs.

If you say your wheels match the ebay link you sent -- you have carbon x-lites. Not xxx-lites. Different rim and hubs.

In Bontrager's current line-up, they only have 2 lines of wheels -- XXX-lite and Aeolus (both offered in clincher and tubular styles). I haven't ridden them myself, but I'm told that the Aeolus is basically a XXX-rim with a carbon fairing bonded on to it.

You could always try contacting Trek/Bontrager. They were very helpful when I was trying to ID a set of wheels that would up being a custom set for the USPS team.

Your wheels are exactly the same as mine, as I PMed you but did not see this post earlier. The only difference is the year. Mine are 2005 and yours are 2006. I don't know about the advertised weight but they are supposed to be just as light/heavy as the 2005 with the same rims, spokes, and hubs...maybe different decals. This is my understanding but have not checked so anyone who knows better can chime in. They are XXX lite tubies. I think they are the second best in Bontrager line up with Aeolus being top dog.

Eric01 has it right. Aeolus is a xxx with a fairing. Whether that makes it top dog or not I don't know?
