New Garmins announced Color maps
from engadget https://www.engadget.com/2007/08/29/g...ric-gps-units/
If you've been riding your bike around town, yet finding yourself completely stupefied when you need to make directional decisions, perhaps you need to check into Garmin's latest cycle-friendly GPS boxes -- the Edge 605 and 705. The latter -- which is the company's higher-end bike-mountable unit -- comes crammed with a slew of features aimed at cycling enthusiasts hoping to get more out of their workout, including automatic speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb, and descent tracking, plus the ability to review the recorded data. The 705 also has an array of add-ons that further assist the obsessed dedicated rider to suss out his or her performance levels, including a heart rate monitor and a speed / cadence sensor. The lower-priced Edge 605 takes a slightly less hardcore approach, though still delivers on skill-testing functions like "Virtual Partner," which allows you to "race" a ghost-competitor over a specified distance and speed, and "Courses," which allow you to race a previously recorded session of your own. Both devices will make an appearance in December, with the 705 ranging in price from $499.99 to $649.99 (depending on the configuration) and the 605 will be $399.99.

Knowing Garmin, the included maps are out of date, and they'll sell you an updated mapset for another $100.

Battery life is marginal with simple monochrome display on the Edge 305. Is it going to be much worse with this high-resolution color display?

I want one. Do I need it? Will it actually help me? I'm not sure. I think I'll pass, then pretend that if I had one I'd be better, and that's why I'm not.

A 305's suggested retail is 379.15....Garmin has a high suggested retail that is commenly butchered...
For instance 276.43 currently....free shipping...
I will probably get one....I like the map option.....the power option intrests me a bit....it would be a good 1/2 step to talk me in to a powertap maybe....of if it works good for me then good...
This is a possibility too....
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142&pID=10527
Intresting and cheap.....give speed and HR, map data and after the fact...

Interesting that everyone touted the GPS based altitude function over the Polar's barometer based but now the Garmin uses barometer too.
Altitude is recorded using a barometric altimeter for the Edge 705.
This accurate altitude data makes it much easier for cyclists to match
their altitude profile with their speed, cadence and heart rate during
post-ride analysis. The Edge 605 measures altitude through GPS positioning.

That's good, but for anyone wanting the same features (except for racing against a virtual partner) you can get the Garmin eTrex Legend Cx (I got mine for $120) and a cateye (for the cadence at $20) for a total of about $140 or so.
And when you couple it with SportTracks (which is free) you can save all your ride data too.

I'd be fine with a monochrome map on my 305. Sometimes when I'm running a course I can't tell exactly where I'm supposed to turn until it beeps at me that I've gone off course. You'd think they could just put that in a software update right?
The 705 is pretty but wow that's expensive.

I got this in an email from the Quarq guys (I expressed an interest on their web site):
So if the Quarq is too much $$$ for you, you can get a Cinqo (that's the power sensor) and an Edge 705 and get your power on that?
This Quarq thing is just looking so cool...
Greetings!
First of all, I would like to thank you for expressing your interest in Quarq. Cycling and technology are our passion and we are very excited about our upcoming products.
Today is full of big announcements and it’s all about ANT+Sport. ANT+Sport is a 2.4 GHz wireless network with standardized communication between devices including bike power sensors, speed sensors, cadence sensors and heart rate straps. This allows separate manufacturers to independently develop sensors and computers, allowing you to pick and choose your favorites to create a system that meets your needs.
This is wonderful for bicycle power measurement because it introduces something new – choice. Within ANT+Sport, you will be able to choose a power sensor and choose a computer separately. There are other ANT+Sport sensors that will be available and interchangeable also – including speed, cadence and heart rate.
So what products are on ANT+Sport? The Quarq CinQo and Qranium are ANT+Sport, as is the new Garmin 705. Take a look at the 705’s product description and you will see the phrase “third-party ANT + Sport-enabled power meters”. That includes the Quarq CinQo.
Eurobike starts tomorrow and Interbike is just around the corner, so keep an eye out for more product announcements from other companies. Also check back to Quarq.us for updates. This is going to get interesting!
Ride on,
Jim Meyer

Someone on the power mailing list posted that the Quarq is going to be around the same price as the SRM.

So, if the new Quarq complete system is too expensive, you may be able to buy just the sensor and hook it to an Edge.
Whether this is sensible or not will really depend on the Quarq pricing. I have seen one post on Weight Weenies that says it will be as expensive as a SRM Pro, but I think we will really have to wait for Interbike to know what the actual price will be. Will also be a good time to see if the Quarq is vaporware or if it's for real.
I really can't stand the Quarq naming. Using these hiply misspelled names makes me feel dumb. What is The Quarq? If the sensor is called "Cinqo", and the head unit is called "Qranium", what is the "Quarq"...?

I didnt miss your point. I just figure if the whole thing is going to be in the SRM price range that just removing the computer head/heart rate out of the equatiion is probably not going to lower the price very much.

I like it, but it is a bit too expensive. I may consider buying one later, but for now my 305 is fine. I would rather save up for a powertap right now.
If they have compatibility with a powermeter, that is a whole other level of desire. If I can just buy a Quarq, SRM, or Powertap without the computer and use this. I will definitely buy one.

OK, I get it. We'll just have to see on pricing. But the Quarq head unit (Qranium) is pretty advanced (barometric altimeter, GPS, tons of memory), so I expect it's expensive. Although it's B&W as opposed to the color Edge.

This says the new wireless SRM will also conform to the ANT + Sport standard. This has got to be good for competition; good for consumers.
