Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The idea of buying a relic is that you get something with power imbued into it by the original owner. If Armstrong (or Ullrich) was selling his crank but asking a little more than market, would you buy it? Do you like the idea of creating a bike with relics from superpowerful riders?

That's really up to you. If you see only pros as fast then you're talking about relic parts from only pro riders.

Olympians or local powerhouses might work for others.

I'd pay a bit more for crank used by Lance. But not because it's imbued with anything. I'd want it as a keepsake.

I wouldn't. But that's because I'm not a souvenir hunter. Like rad said it would be a keepsake

There is a 1999 Trek 5500 "Lance Limited Edition" bike on eBay right now for $5,000. It comes with a certificate of authenticity (333 of 1999 made) and was personally autographed by Lance and comedian Robin Williams with a felt-tipped Sharpie at the Ride for the Roses (all of this according to the eBay seller). It has been ridden 15,000 miles so it had not exactly been kept in a vault for 8 years.

In this case, Lance himself actually touched this bike, but is it worth $5K? Mmmm -- not to me.

Parts no.

I would pay a premium for a complete team bike though. There is no objective reason for this, it's really only owning a piece of history and I would place a higher value on that history over a "stock" version.

Would you pay extra for a fast person's used cycling shorts?

No. If I'm buying a used part to put on my bike I want it from the slow skinny nerdy guy with the power tap that cleans his bike after every ride.

Are you joking?? "power imbued into it by the original owner"??

Not only would I not do it. I would heap ridicule on anybody who did!

Reminds me of those mindless chickies who screamed and swooned whenever Elvis would give them a sweaty neckerchief.

Would I buy a used 2+ race formula 1 engine as a collectible? Yes.
Would I buy one to use myself? Hell no.

Never. The only component that made the part fast is not included with the purchase.

As for pro parts, I wouldn't even buy those at a discount, because the speed that is "imbued" into it will be offset and eclipsed by the slowness I will add to it.

My favorite bike is my Al Orbea with full Record I got in a swap meet from the Jelly Belly team manager for $1000 with no wheels. So, I'd definitely buy fast people's equipment but I'd never pay extra for anything.

The vast majority of parts I buy are castoffs from pro teams. There is no way in hell I'd pay more for them just because of who rode them before me. They are dirt cheap and I like them that way!
