Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Minor Group Ride Complaint

Please don't complain about the speed when you're a mile away from breaking off to do the "short route".

I'm more than willing to ease up a bit for the sake of the group, but if you're not going to be there to do any work, don't worry about the tempo of the "long route" riders, make your own line.

That is all.

I've typically run into the opposite problem. Guys doing the metric option blistering the pace, only to drop off leaving me fried to complete the century by myself.

Are you getting a lot of complaints?

No, it wasn't even my pull when the the complaint happened. I was just a little irked when the guy who asked for a slower pace took a different route so soon afterward. Like I said, it's a minor complaint.

I probably should thank him for the extra work of catching the group ahead.......but I won't!

I would have thought trying to hang with the group would increase one's ability. Everyday you can hang on for a little bit longer. At least thats how I look at it.

By the same token, don't fret needlessly about so-and-so getting dropped on the return route, like a mile or two from the meeting spot. If your club has a no-rider-gets dropped policy, that's fine. But it needn't extend to the very last mile. It usually applies to the early miles on the way out. The return route should be about cooling down anyway.

Oh good, I'll have some company when I decide to join them some time soon.

I jumped on to the Rose Bowl group yesterday for maybe 1/2 mile just for kicks and old time's sake. I've got a ways to go.
