Whats good bar tape?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Whats good bar tape?

My bike came with the stock foam type grip tape. I do not really like it because its too soft and makes the handlebar bigger for me to grip. I have small hands so I like smaller grip tape. I was a LBS the other day and a Look bike had leather grip type on it. I noticed it was a lot thinner than mine and it feels a lot better for gripping too. Where can I get this tape?

It was probably the Fizik Microtex tape. Similar to Stella Azzurra Eleganza, but thinner.

I've run Serfas, Fizik, and Deda (not to mention stock crap, and AMAZING Soyo grips).
Overall, through numerous hours outside and in, I like the Deda better. It's cheap, looks good with the logo's, has a secure bar-end, and it doesn't get as slick as the Fizik with sweat. I think the white Fizik tape is different from the other colors, but I've tried both the red and white and haven't noticed much.

Actually, just go cloth.

+1 on the cloth.

anything else is too 'mushy' and uncomfortable on long rides for me.
I've found my hands are less secure on the bars if I have padded tape, and my fingers tend to tingle 15 or 20 miles into a ride.

ken.

I love fizik, and I don't find that it gets slick with water. In fact, I think that it beats out Deda for grip when it's wet.

I know what tape I want!

I want the grip tape that comes on the Look bikes (555). Do you guys know what I am talking about? It seems to me that it is made out of leather and I like it because it is thin, its not all thick and squishy like the foam stuff on my bike.

I've always thought tape was tape was tape. I wait until Nashbar has a sale on thier house brand tape, and has a 20% coupon code. I picked up some a year or so ago for like 2.99 or 3.99 a set.. I bought 15 sets. I gave some away when buddies crashed etc... saves them the $20 etc...

Nothing like Cinelli cork tape for me. Been using it for a decade at least. But, I have to admit, the last time I needed bar tape, the LBS on my street only had Shimano gel tape. I actually like it a lot. It's still on the bike, with the Shimano embossed lettering neatly hidden by my wrapping technique. Still, next time, I'm back to genuine Italian cork tape.

You might as well be describing Fizik then. Same difference.

Yea, whats your account name on kawiforums?

Hey, what material is the Deda tape made out of? I heard that cloth is good since it can be pulled really tight and give a good feel to it.

Deda is made of dense foam. It's a bit thick. Not chunky thick, but certainly thicker than Fizik and , I'd imagine, the Look tape. Fizik is pretty thin.

The Fizik stuff is great, but, it does vary in texture with color. Cinelli corks os good as well, but doesn't seem to be quite it used to to.

Actually I was worried that my parrot had developed a taste for saddles or brifter hoods as well, but I was relieved. Bar tape is relatively inexpensive. And this was way less stressful than the time he stripped all the bark off of a huge indoor ficus tree and killed it. The story of our parrot and the Christmas tree will remain untold.

I've got small hands too and I can relate to cork wrap making the bars a little too thick. My hands sweat too much however so the Fizik tape is out because its too slippery. I'm currently using the Deda tape and I quite like it. Its not as thick as cork wrap, its stronger than cork wrap and its got a good grip.

Regards, Anthony
