Ever blacked out on the bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ever blacked out on the bike?

I started a medication yesterday that may result in "low blood pressure/fainting". I'm riding this afternoon and I'm having visions of how bad things could get twer I to black out on the bike. Could wake up dead.

My brother-in-law has a mild version of narcolepsy. He fell asleep (mid-day) on his HD motorcycle at 60 mph. He went off the road, through a trailer park (went between 2 rows of trailers) and ran into the chain link backstop at a baseball field. He was banged up, but lived.

I worked with a guy who used to be a C-130 pilot. He had a form of epilepsy that they didn't find out about until he seized during an instrument approach. His seizures were relatively mild; he would just zone out for 30 - 60 sec. They figure he had seized in the cockpit before, but never at a time that anyone noticed. The last time he flew they were shooting the ILS in some nasty stuff. He said they were on approach, nearing minimums (like right at the IM), the co-pilot doing the call outs. The next thing he knew they were climbing out, balls to the wall, a couple thousand feet higher than the last altitude call out. He had seized and had not responded so the co-pilot executed a missed approach. He was, of course, immediately grounded. Yeeha.

About 35 years ago when I was in high school delivering morning papers, I was on a long stretch of gentle down slope toward the end of my route one morning at about 5:30 and had about 3/4 of a mile between deliveries and woke up as my bike started rumbling across the gravel shoulder...

I managed to stay upright and swerved back onto the road, but that was the last time I fell asleep on 2 wheels.

I once blacked out but that was from head trauma due to a crash (that was caused by a kid running into the street, or so I've been told).

In June of 2005 I blacked out after my front QR detonated and I crashed, bouncing my (fortunately) helmeted Pcad noggin off the Berlin (Germany) pavement @ 25mph. Woke up in a German hospital ER with a doctor speaking to me in perfect English with a German/North Carolina accent (he had spent a few years in NC as an intern before he returned to Berlin to practice). It was an other worldly experience, but oddly pain free. I did look rather gruesome however. But I was riding two days later. Road rash, bruises, concussion but no lasting trauma.

By the way some Berlin Good Samaritan put me and my bike in their car and deposited me @ the ER without identifying themselves. Never learned who they were. Very odd experience that had a happy outcome, could have been much worse. Total Berlin ER bill was under $1000 (that included a CT scan). I'm sure in the USA it would have been much higher.

Came very scary close years ago after taking a large dose of Darvon that had been prescribed for back pain. I took double the dose figuring with no pain I could really fly. I almost passed out within a mile of the house, and weakly wobbled my way back home. My only attempt at "doping"

I blacked out for a couple of seconds during a climb on Roan Mtn. in Tenn. I was about 75% up the climb and wasn't stressed, heart rate wasn't high and was on a fairly easy part of the climb. Only thing I can't think of was the elevation. I was at about 5k feet at the time.

A friend of mine fainted while on the bike before, it was caused by Hyperthermia I believe, it was a hot day, doing a decent climb, pushing people up (he was on a family ride). As he was pushing his wife up the hill, he fell into her and knocker her over, then swerved out into the road and fell over, they had to drag him off the road out of the way of cars and get him cooled down and re-hydrated. Pretty scary stuff. His body just shut down because it was overheating. I'd say ride the trainer for a bit if you're on some new meds or something and see how it goes.

Last June there was single bike fatality on the W&OD on the Vienna side of the Hunter Mill Rd crossing and accident reports speculated that the rider blacked out and hit head first on the pavement which killed him. The rider was wearing a helmet.

What're you taking, 666...Viagra or something? j/k

If your doctor prescribed a medication to you with these possible effects, you should make him/her aware of your usual activities, i.e. cycling. High levels of exertion may have an additive effect, leading to just the things you fear.

No, it's an anti-psychotic/mood stabilizer. Anyone want to ride with me?

Hell, most of the people I know are on an antipsychotic or two. No problem with that.

I've come close a few times, mostly due to exhaustion and dehydration, but never actually passed out while riding. I've seen other people who looked like they were right on the edge themselves.

That's not mild. He should not have a license to drive anything.
