Nice bikes or nice biking clothes?

If you had one choice, what would it be?

Top of the line bike, but crappy clothes.
(ie. Record/Dura Ace equipped, but low end jerseys and shorts with pulls, rips, stains)

or

Top of the line cloths, but low end bike.
(Assos, $200+ jerseys, $200+ shorts, $300+ shoes, but old sora/tiagra/xenon/600 equipped bike)

bike. duh

Given that most who buy high end bikes buy high-end clothes to match, this question is moot.

However, assuming that this choice was a common one, I'd probably get a higher end bike.

Plus, your situation already gives the biker in question something to wear to practice, so it works out well.

Plus, you can't drop people with your clothes :-D

point?

By the way nothing wrong with 600 components.

so-so bike and so-so clothes (Ultegra components and Canari/Performance/Pearl Izumi clothing). Works for me.

TRaffic Jammer 09-07-07 01:52 PM

high end bike first

Just wanting to know where would people put more money towards. There's nothing wrong with Sora/Tiagra either.

I really can't answer this question, because I buy what I perceive to be quality items in all of my purchases.

Blue Jays 09-07-07 01:58 PM

Emphasis would go towards the bicycle.

Ryoku Hunny 09-07-07 03:15 PM

high end bike..

travis200 09-07-07 04:16 PM

high end bicycle would be my choice

Foovanadil 09-07-07 04:50 PM

Hmmm.... The bike doesn't make the man and I sure do like keeping my bits comfortable.

I think I would lean towards nice clothes (at least nice bibs)

but I'm not sure.

Edonis13 09-07-07 05:21 PM

bike.

A good bike will last you longer and make you happeir. You can always buy the clothing later.

I just wish I had your dilemna and the money for either one!

This has to be the worst thread I've ever seen.

Anybody with half a brain would put their $$$ towards a high end bike before they dropped coin for high end clothes. Even if they were a crappy rider, at least they had a nice bike.

What would be the point of the opposite...high end clothes on a crappy bike?

Hickeydog 09-07-07 07:19 PM

ummmmmm. DA BIKE!!!!!!

Nachoman 09-07-07 09:05 PM

Cloths. Looking good on a bike is most important.

DanielS 09-07-07 09:23 PM

Okay, if those were my only choices... I'd actually be inclined to go for the clothes.

Provided that
the bike was setup right for me and had a saddle that I agreed with, it doesn't matter what components it has. They might be a bit heavier, and wear faster, but they'll still get the job done.

There is a difference between cheap and nasty clothes and expensive clothes though.... good shorts will keep your butt comfy so you can go for longer and good shoes are also very important I think.

One could commute on a crappy bike while wearing high end cycling clothes because the bike will be locked outside, but I doubt anyone really do that unless all they had was high end cycling clothes.

Some people are satisfied with their bike equipped with 105/Centaur and wear high end clothes because the clothing might define comfort more than the bike.

Would you snub someone for riding a 105 equipped bike while wearing the latest top of the line cycling clothes?
