Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Advice???

hello everyone, im new to the forum and to bike riding, i bought my first road bike a month ago. It is a mid 80's Schwinn Circuit, all original, mint, ect. I prefer older steel bikes, and my question is, should i hang on to it, or sell it? If i sell it should i get another Schwinn or should i get something european like a bianchi? I bought the bike to lose weight, i usually go on 1hr leisure rides, but i would want a bike that can progress with me, any suggestions???

Does the bike fit you well? Is it in good condition? If yes to both, then keep it. You won't get much money by selling it.

The Circuit is a high end bike (in fact, it was the best Schwinn model made in the Greenville, MS plant) second only to the Waterford built Paramounts in the Schwinn model line-up. If it fits, keep it and grow with it. The frame is Columbus SL/SP mix and is worthy of upgrade if you decide you want more than the 7-speed cassette.

Thx to both of you, regarding upgrading, what would you recommend? My gears seem kinda tall, but im a newbie so i could be wrong, also is wieght with steel frames an issue? when i first bougth it, it wieghed 27lbs., i removed a few unnecessary parts and now it wieghs 20lbs, would it be worth changing out parts for CF and swapping cassettes(whats a cassette?), to be honest, i didnt feel a huge difference when i removed 7lbs., but maybe thats because im a noob too

Curious as hell. What 'unecessary" parts did you remove to drop 7 pounds? I'm thinking you might need the saddle and front wheel.

According to the 1987 Schwinn catalog specs, the 23" (58.4cm) Circuit weighed 21 pounds. It must have had a lot of added on junk to weigh 27 pounds.

The cassette is the cluster of gears on the rear wheel. The stock cassette for your Circuit is a Suntour 7-speed with 13-14-15-17-19-21-24 tooth gears. Modern bikes have ten speed cassettes with the derailleur shifters built into the brake levers (brifters).

If I were you, I'd ride it like it is for a while, then make decisions about upgrading drivetrain components or getting a new bike. The Circuit is a very nice bicycle as it is.

Thx again to all of you, and to answer your questions, i removed a very heavy rear rack of some sort, a tool kit(figured i dont need it yet because i only ride close to my house), frame pump, rear brakes & all all related hardware(i know, im wierd), aero bars, & computer. With all of that stuff on there, it wieghed a little over 27lbs, and when i removed it all, it now wieghs a little less than 21lbs, later on in life after some upgrading, hopefully ill be at a carbon wieght PS i believe my frame is 62cm.
