Ah, nuts - my road bike got stolen
My beautiful late 80's Univega Gran Record got stolen off my porch a few nights ago! It was unlocked - yeah, I know, but this is not exactly a high-crime area - and someone must have waltzed up in the middle of the night and ridden off with it. The word is out, and if I'm lucky someone will spot it and I'll get it back, but I'm not holding my breath. I've never had a bike stolen before. I was planning to race this bike in the spring, and now I'm not sure what I'm going to do - I don't really have the money for a new bike. I might be able to scrape enough together to get a bike this winter, but that's money I'd like to spend elsewhere. Besides, I want MY bike back! I am so mad . Bike thieves suck!

Man I feel for you. I had a bike stolen when I was in 6th grade. I'm almost 50 years old now, AND IT STILL HURTS!

When I was 7, I got a brand new bike for Christmas, my dad and I spent 2 days building it, and on the 3rd day, my neighbor 6 doors up stole it.

Geez... our system is way to easy on thieves... even if it's found they'll get a slap on the hands and off they go. Sorry to hear it... my father-in-law had his stolen a last summer while he was getting his morning coffee... Hopefully yours will be found.

Sorry about your bike. I finally put in what I call "pretty good security" in my garage. I put a large eye bolt into the wall. I threaded a cable through my frames and rear wheels and padlocked it. A good bolt cutter will get through the whole thing, but it will stop the grab and go theft. Of course the garage itself is locked, and only open when some thing or vehicle is being moved in or out.

I've done the same thing in my garage. I wonder how many of us keep our bikes in the garage unlocked? I did until last year when after a garage door malfunction, I realized how vulnerable my bikes were. They are now locked up. What about it everyone? Do you keep your bikes in the garage unlocked??

Man, that sucks, sorry to hear that. But Amherst has what, 30,000 college kids? I live up the road from you in a college town and have had two bikes ripped over the years. College towns are generally very high bike theft areas.
In the future, get a really good lock or keep the ride inside. I hope somehow you get your bike back. Don't be surprised if you see it around town.

There was one day when my garage door malfunctioned and opened as soon as it touched the ground. If I was in a car and I used the remote control, I might have driven away without having seen it.
If you have careless family members who leave the garage door open, that's also another reason to lock your bikes up. At least lock a wheel so the casual thief can't ride away with it.

Another thing: I was at home when some thieves in a van tried to intrude through the garage -- they opened the door with their own remote.
My old garage door opening system used 12 dip switches in the remote to open the garage, but it's very easy to crack. That's only 4,096 combinations for a computer-based cracker to run through. This was last summer in 2006. Since then, we've installed a new garage door opening system and disabled the remote.

I don't have an opener on my garage door so I don't lock up the bikes when they're in there. The positive lock of the door is as secure as a cable wrapped around the bike from a eye bolt.
Just wondering how many of you that lock you bikes in your garages have the tools on the walls to cut the lock (e.g. bolt cutters on the work bench).

I keep my bikes cable locked to an eyebolt in my garage. I live in a fancy-pants gated community with security officers patrolling 24-7 and still had 2 bikes stolen from my driveway this summer. Fortunately, they were sitting out there because they were 15-year-old Magna "mountain" bikes from Target that I was trying to figure out how to get rid of, but it still made me think. If the garage door had been up and the cable lock off, there goes a Merlin Extralight along with the Magnas.

No chance you have renter's insurance, is there? My policy covers my bikes and my car when they're anywhere in the apartment, on the porch, in the driveway, in the yard etc... locked or not.

Here is a clue:
Pee-wee: I wouldn't sell my bike for all the money in the world. Not for a hundred million, trillion, billion dollars!
Francis: Then you're crazy!
Pee-wee: I know you are but what am I?
Francis: You're a nerd!
Pee-wee: I know you are but what am I?
Francis: You're an idiot!
Pee-wee: I know you are but what am I?
Pee-Wee, Francis: I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? Pee-wee: Infinity!
Francis: No, I'm not.
Francis, Pee-Wee: You are! No way! Knock it off! Cut it out!
Francis: Shut up, Pee-wee!
Pee-wee: Why don't you make me.
Francis: You make me!
Pee-wee: Because. I don't make monkeys, I just train 'em.
Francis: Pee-wee listen to reason.
[Pee-Wee cuffs his hand around his ear in a listening motion]
Francis: Pee-wee!
Pee-wee: Sh! I'm listening to reason.
Francis: Pee-wee!
Pee-wee: That's my name, don't wear it out.
Francis: Remember the first time I saw your bike? You came riding past my house and I came running out to tell you how much I liked it even way back then?
Pee-wee: I love that story.
[jumps on bike and pedals away]
Francis: You'll be sorry, Pee-wee Herman!
(BTW, I saw this movie the day I had a bike stolen.)

Had my MTB stolen from my garage two years ago. The thief had to come through our gate and in through the side door of the garage, walk across the garage and take the bike off the hanger. We were out of town and I didn't notice for almost two days after we got back that it was gone. As a previous poster said...it still hurts today...that bike got me through some tough emotional times.
Now my roadie is on the same hanger but locked to the rack and my wife's bike. The side door to the garage stays locked now also.
Sorry for your loss.

Grrrr... I had a worthless, rusting Huffy stolen from a train station bike rack a few years ago. I was not pleased. Having a decent bike stolen would probably send me into a state of apoplexy.
