Helpo! Me!
Double Post alert! I needed more people to see this 'case im desperate!
Suppose my rear Sora derailleur is busted good and I have no money to fix it. (it hangs into spokes after it snapped under normal load [or something]) Anyone seen that chain delinker at Wal-Mart? I have money to buy that (barely), so maybe I could take the RD off and use the tool to shorten the chain, thus allowing me to ride in atleast a single speed? Besides a multi-tool for removing the RD, would that chain delinker do the job completely? I never looked at it much. Not that I shop at wal-mart.

Have you tried checking for LBS for a cheap, used, RD?
You may be able to walk out the door with something at a really reasonable price. It will save you the cost of a new chain when you actually do accrue enough money to get your RD back.

Bummer! There are a couple LBS's in my area that I know would part with a used 8spd indexed shimano derailler for not much cash. Make some calls and see what you discover. Go with your bike when they aren't busy and the mechanic might install it if you brought him some beer. Good luck.
About re-sizing the chain and riding singlespeed. A chain tool is what you would need to shorten the chain, but you also may need to buy some special pins to reassemble the links if it is a Shimano chain. See if you can land a cheap RD first.
