Dumb Questions about Garmin 305
Hi! I just received a new Garmin 305 from Geoman today and I already have a dumb question (after searching the web and reading the manula)...How do I get the Garmin to start recording data? Do I have to press the start/stop button every time I start riding, or can it be set to start automaticaly...like my much cheaper device? I just got back from going around the block to try it out, the Speed and Cadence were working, but the Distance | Avg. Speed | and Time sections all stayed at zero.
I'm also running on a few hours of sleep last night, so I'm probably missing something...

You do have to hit the start button when u first begin your ride, but u can set it so that it stops and restarts automatically when you stop and start during your rides. Also remember to hit the stop/start button when you finish your ride aswell.. Mine is away getting repaired at the moment, I am hanging to get it back so i can analyze my data again..enjoy, they are great.

Tarmacguy is correct...
You must hit start/stop to begin recording but you can set it to stop and start at a certain speed (mine is set at 2.0 mph)...
This is important because in a race situation you can hit start/stop when standing at the start line and it will not start recording until you roll off the line...
I have forgotten to press start/stop at the start of a race due to the excitement and adrenaline...
It is a bummer to realize you have not started your computer and only have part of a race recorded...

Thanks for the replies!
Here's another one, I'll be doing the Hope Century next weekend. I'm riding with a few other people and I'm sure we'll stop for lunch around the 50 mile mark...I set the Garmin to AutoPause, so it'll stop recording data when I stop (right?), but if I turn it off will I lose all my data or will the Garmin store it as an older file while creating a new one when I turn it back on? Or should I just keep it on the whole time?
Thanks!

You can turn it off and it will store the ride...
Edit - As Mongo says if you do not reset the computer it will tack the new ride onto the old ride...
