skipping in the 11
setting up some wide range gearing for Everest challenge. Put on a 11-32 IRD 10 speed cassette, and a XT derailleur.
First problem, LBS said the XT couldn't be set up to hit all 10 gogs (of whichI'm a littleskeptical because it was hitting ok for me in a short test ride.) They convinced me to put on along cage 105 derailleur. This derailleur theretically can't shift to a 32, but it does that fine. Problem is that it skips in the 11. I've adjusted the barrel adjuster both ways, the low limit screw, and the b screw, and it still skips under pressure. I'm running a brand new 10 speed wipperman connex chain, checked for stiff links, and no porblem in any other cog. Any thoughts? |

Have a look at the cable where it bolts to the derailleur. It may not have been put in properly. I did this accidently/stupidly once on a dura ace and it wasn't immediately obvious - didn't have it running through properly at the derailleur. All the gears were working spot on except on the 11. The guru mechanic at my dads mates shop (former national team mechanic) picked it up and it wasn't even immediately obvious to him.

Are the shifters 10-speed? If they are there shouldn't be a problem.
|
yep D/A 10 speed
|
do you have a connex (or similar) quick-link on the chain. If so and its on backwards it will skip on the 11.
|
yep. How do you know if its backwards?
|
Is it the correct lock ring? If the lockring is meant for a 12-tooth cog, it'll be
too big for the 11, and prevents the chain seating properly on the teeth This happened to me once :) |

is it worth getting out there and being short a gear?
|
check for a bent cog, that will make it skip in only one particular gear

It only skips on the 11. |
your quick link is backwards. If you don't believe me, consult the wipperman manual.

the quick link backwards was the answer. Turned it around and it hits perfect now. Thanks guys.
