Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SPD-SL's vs. Speedplay Light Actions- load distribution

I know that Speedplay claims their road pedals offer just as large of a platform size as Shimano or other SPD-SL pedals. I was wondering if anyone here has actually had both SPD-SL's and Speedplays and could attest to Speedplays' having the same performance attributes, those being the absence or reduction of hot spots on the forefoot that people get with SPD's (atb pedals) as well as that "feel" of having a larger platform that people report with SPD-SL's.

I have Speedplays and used to use Looks, and neither of them gave me hot spots. I do feel a slight "rocking" sensation on the Speedplays while the Looks seemed more firmly positioned, but not while pedaling so it doesn't seem to affect performance.

I saw someone mention in another thread that there are red and yellow cleats available for the Shimano SPD-SL pedals, yellow allowing more float. Does anyone know how much float?

Also, which is easier to clip into, especially when pulling away from a stoplight, the Ultegra SPD-SL's or the Speedplays?

I have been a fan of my SpeedPlay X-2's for 8 years. I had knee issues, but the float afforded me from SpeedPlay makes a big differece. At least they work well for me. (If somethin' ain't broke, don'tfix it).
