Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I used to live near Canton Street. It's shorter than you'd think, but so steep, it's funny. There are a couple of other steep streets in the area too.

Impressive. I don't think I've ever encountered more than 15% on a bicycle, though I did go down one in a rickety old bus in Trinidad that had to be at least 20 or 25%. That was frightening.

Hey, that's Vireo (forum member) in that clip climbing Fargo St.

I happen to live less than a mile away from that street. A few years back we bought a house just a block away from Fargo St on a similarly steep hill. We ended up selling that house in just one year....my wife just hated our steeply angled driveway entrance, as it used to scare the heck out of her.

Pretty disappointing that they do not tell you how long these grades are. Which is more difficult, 35% for 20 feet or 20% for 2 miles?

What's the big deal about the guy riding that scooter up the hill in New Zealand? Anybody can buy a scooter and ride it.

17% grades EVERY FRIGGIN DAY when I come home to Casa Pcad. I don't call the hill I live on Mt. Doom for nothing. But this thread does make me feel better. 30%+ grades? That's completely insane. What were they thinking when they put a street up a hill like that? That one in New Zealand is unfathomable.

By the way, the training value of grades over 15% is approximately zero point zero zero. But it does wreck your knees if that's your goal.

Yeah, don't you have to lean forward on a Segway(tm) to move forward? So he'd be leaning forward, downhill, on THAT grade....
Then gravity's affect on his personal center of gravity would have him leaning particularly forward, thereby speeding up the Segway...

and....

faceplant time

Red Bull had a downhill race 2 years ago called The Road Rage. It was on Tuna Canyon in Malibu and featured a top speed prize along with overall best time. Riders were allowed to use disc brakes and wear leathers or anything they wanted. Miles Rockwell won both prizes with a top speed of 58mph,(I think), and fastest ET. He got $6000 for his day.
