Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ahh, that new tire smoothness

You know that smoothness and great handling you feel when you put new tires on a car? Well, I put new tires on my road bike (conti ultra sports--I know, low end conti, but they last a long time and serve my rec and commuter purposes) due to wear and a large hole from a big piece of glass. Anyway, I noticed a considerable difference in smoothness on the road. I love that new tire feel. I guess there's no other point to this post than to share my delight in a smoother ride.

I agree that it's delightful to ride on smooth tyres, but sometimes they don't even have to be new; I've found that when fitting the tyre, the extra care taken in getting it to seat correctly so that there isn't even the slightest sign of a wobble or hop, will pay off in smoothness, especially if you're riding rollers. Also, making sure the tyre is reasonably clean and is free of road-tar, chewing-gum or other crud will help the smoothness…

YMMV -

I find that if I drink a few martinis before I ride the road feels pretty smooth no matter how old my tires are.
