Pcad goes Keo after 15 years on Speedplay X's

I've had issues with hot spots in warm weather on longer rides. The last 10-20 miles of my 80-110 mile Saturday rides get rather torturous with painful hot spots on my feet. I'm convinced that could be because the design of the Speedplays. The Keos have a wider platform. The pedals are slightly heavier than the Ti Zero's (190 grams vs. 150 grams) but the cleats are considerably simpler and 20g lighter, so the pedal/cleat combo is within 20 grams of the lightest pair of Speedplays.

Initial observations: lower profile, easier clipping in, harder clipping out, and I miss the more wide ranging float on the Speedplays (I have the 9º float Keo cleats). But that should be plenty of float for me. They do appear to present a considerably wider and more balanced pedaling platform. I need three sets of pedals for three bikes, but I'm starting with one set. I'm keeping the Speedplays for a while, I'll eBay them once I'm convinced this Keo thing will work. My right knee is bad news, that may be a factor, but I don't think I need the big float of the Speedplays. Another factor: in winter those complicated Speedplay cleats are a major pain. If you get snow/mud in them and try to re-clip, God help you. I ride a ton of miles, the simple Keo cleats are cheaper and will probably last longer. Slightly easier to walk in as well.

Another plus: you don't need a pedal wrench, they use a 6mm allen bolt. That's easier.

One last note: Keo Schmeo, this feels and looks like the same Look pedal design from 1988 with a considerably more svelte carbon form factor. By the way, this is the 'hot' 'new' (looks pretty old to me) pedal at my LBS. Never let it be said that Pcad wasn't a sucker for a good sales pitch. Let's hope this helps my sore footsies. I'll let you know if I can get used to the Keos this week.

"Frank, I've been riding Speedplay X pedals since you were in 4th grade. Going Keo would be like Fing my secretary."

Frank:
"Sometimes it's good to F the secretary"

Pcad:
"I'll take a set of the Carbon Ti's, put them on my Visa"

That is life in a NY area LBS. By the way, the owner of this establishment spends so much time at the local Happy Ending massage parlors they send him a gift basket (to the bike shop) at Xmas. No kidding.

P.S. Frank should be selling bonds or Mercedes, not bicycle crap.

Hopefully with enough contribution on your behalf, you'll be receiving a gift basket at XMas too.

Fortunately the lovely Mrs. Pcad and cycling are all I need. Besides, I need the money for bike schwag. I can't be wasting it on Happy Endings.

Do they have a Ti/carbon version?

If you want a great pedal you should definately try the Ultegra 6620's. Absolutely amazing!

They are 120 grams per pair heavier and have less float.

Next suggestion.

Now you will see why the Keo Krowd Krows about their pedals...

My Keo's are slippery as snot, and wear down quickly. Going back to SPD-SL's, the new DA version, next change over.

Yea, I guess it is easier to have "torturous...hot spots on [your] feet" for 15 years then to get a comfortable pedal because of 120 grams. Those 120 grams will slow pcad down so much more then the pain in pcad's feet. I forgot that 120 grams slows pcad down so much when pcad is climbing hors categorie climbs in the Pyrenees. Since every gram is so important to pcad he must have the most lightweight parts since he cant afford 120 grams in the pedals. What saddle does pcad use? It should be something very minimalistic. Pcad doesn't want extra weight slowing him down. Pcad needs to save weight especially on something so insignificant as a saddle and pedals. :rolleyes:


When you switch to the Ultegra 6620's or the Dura Ace version in 15 more years you'll thanks me. :)

120 grams is a mere quarter pound, Mr. weight weenie.

A small price to pay for foot comfort.

You could shave way more weight than that by taking only one water bottle. :D

Pcad doesn't use a seat; he sits right on the tube. It's all part of that tough-guy image.

How old are your shoes pcad? I had a lot of problems with sore feet while riding with Speedplays last summer. I tried all sorts of adjustments, custom shoe insoles, and even a Look-style pedal without any resolution. I finally bought a new pair of shoes to replace my old shoes that had 15,000 miles on them. The new shoes were noticeably stiffer, due in part to their carbon soles. I went back to the Speedplays, and I liked them much better than the Look imitators. I may still switch to another brand of shoes as I have wide feet and I sometimes get a hot spot on the outside edge of the middle of my foot, but that is related to the shoes, not the pedals.

Be a man; use fixed cleats.

Pcad, the problem is the socks, not the pedals. I'm too lazy to paste the pic at the moment, but you know what I mean.

Please continue to be lazy. :D

Hot spots are more than likely a poorly fitted shoe...I recommend spending tons of money on a custom Simmons shoe. Nobody here seems to talk about them. Why do people spend so damn much on a bike and not even get a custom fitted shoe to go with it?
