Saddle Sores...?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle Sores...?

I've had two (maybe three, I can't tell anymore) saddle sores since Saturday. I started using hydrocortisone cream last night and it seemed to make them go away enough so that I didn't have to walk funny.
Well tonight on a ride, one of them opened up, and needless to say the last nine miles was Hell. Standing, the chamois rubbed against it, sitting, the saddle rubbed against it.

So, is there anything I can do to make this go away quickly? I've got a crit tomorrow night and I'd like to win it.

Big as$ bandaids (no pun intended). The bandaid will act as an extra layer of skin. Or, if you can find a willing person to do it, throw on a couple layers of "new skin", a liquid that bonds to the skin and acts as a protective layer.

Good luck with the crit.

I figured Chamois Cream and PI's Super-Duper microbiotic chamois would help to prevent, but it didn't.
So, a band-aid or liquid skin?

Bag Balm:

As far as prevention, they key is to kill any bacteria that get in any breaks in the skin. After you shower, dry your saddle sore prone area well then clean it thoroughly with an antibacterial wipe (Wet Ones) before dressing. You have to do this as soon as possible after riding before any breaks in the skin seal up and trap the bacteria. If I'm driving to a ride I scrub the area before I drive home. This works well for me.

do 2 things...

1. Have a donut. In the foot-care section of drug stores, you'll find donut-shaped foam pads in several diameters. They're made for corns, but can help you ride more comfortably with a saddle sore, too. Simply place it with the sore in the center of the cutout to relieve direct pressure. The adhesive backing will keep it in place.

2. Use Preparation-H Ointment. Prep H works on saddle sores because it shrinks swollen tissue and soothes pain. Apply it five minutes before applying chamois cream to your shorts, and putting on your shorts. Also try a dab on sores after rides to dull discomfort.

you can also use Boil Ease (instead of the Prep-H) to dull the pain, before you ride, if it's a boil type of saddle sore...

also, check your saddle height, it may be a bit high causing your hips to drop resulting in side to side irritation, and you don't want that...

Bag balm will help prevent them and will add enough lubricant to prevent them from getting worse.

As for the recent unset, what does your seat look like? I had an older specialized atlias that in the sit bone region, the padding was covered with some other material instead of the typical vinyl or whatever, and would grip my shorts like crazy and eat the hell out of my shorts and as$. If I put the bag-blam on before I rode, it would be fine. That being said, you may be in need of a new seat.

For the bag-balm, check out different drug stores. I bought a tin at walgreens.

Back in the day Bag Balm had a bit of Mercury in it and would heal sores practically overnight. Too much would kill you, of course, but that was a minor oversight.

The hydrocortisone cream got rid of mine literally overnight.

Then again, I've only ever had one. If you wash your shorts after every ride, it shouldn't really be an issue. I don't even use chamois cream or anything, just keep everything clean.

In addition to the link above re Amazon, you can get Bag Balm from Walgreen's website. And, it DOES work.

or you can just drive to a local CVS Pharmacy and pick it up, in the skin care isle...

and as far as my personal experience with it, it's never worked 100% of the time for me, but i do love how everyone here thinks it's the equivalent of Kryptonite for saddle sores.

Would it be that big a deal for you to take a few days off? If one of those sores gets infected, you'll be taking a lot more time off, in an ER, with a tube pushing antibiotics into you as your money goes out.

+1 this has been my experience

Just channel the pain and use it as an advantage in the crit.

I got a saddle sore a couple weeks ago. I stayed off the saddle for a couple days, but if you must ride, which I eventually did after the couple days, here's what I did

showered before rides
wear clean chamois
assos chamois cream on chamois and skin
get out of chamois as soon as I got home and took a shower
use neosporin after the shower
