Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

@ alanbikehouston

Thanks for my new signature! Which I must now parse to under 500 characters...

"If you are not willing to dress properly, you can NOT be a roadie. Being a roadie requires wearing the exact same clothing as pro riders, the same helmets, the same shoes, the same pedals. Being a roadie is ALL about fashion.

That guy in your neighborhood who rides 350 days a year on a road bike with BMX pedals, while wearing cut-off jeans, tennis shoes, and a Jimmy Buffett tee-shirt? Although he may be riding on a road bike, he can NOT ever be a roadie...he is just a guy on a bike."

BRILLIANT!

Now why whould he be laughing? I took his sarcasm for exactly what it was and I embraced it. He is the Yoda of these boards and if I can glean just an ioata of his wisdom I'll be a better person for it.

Cycling is about fashion, shaving, tan lines, ability - in that order.

More abh wisdom

"So, the "middle" ring is exactly where 90% of cyclists ought to be, about 90% of the time.
Those gears, from above 96 gear inches gear inches to 128 gear inches are sold as a marketing device, because the marketing guys understand that 40 year old accountants want the same gears that Lance Armstrong has, even though these gears are gonna tear up their knees."
