Am I nuts?
I have like to bike ride for a while, but in the past few months I've been getting "into" it. I've been out there riding every day as hard as possible. I started to feel stronger and stronger. It was great. I was on top of the world. My legs have gotten more toned, and I just just felt powerful. Now, for no reason at all, for the past week and a half, when I ride, my legs just feel weak. I think I am still doing around the same speeds (although I can't tell for sure because I don't have a computer). I don't get it.
Here are a few possibilities that I have thought of:
1) I have been riding every single day. Perhaps I need to take a day off to give my muscles time to rest and rebuild.
2) I built up the concept and measure of my own strength in my mind, and perhaps built it up to be more than it truly is, so now when I ride, i am faced with the cold hard truth.
3) I actually am much stronger, but have reached the next "step" in power. So now, for this rung of the ladder that I have acheived, I am still relatively at the bottom of this power level. (Like transfering to a better school, but having a lower GPA because it's just that much of a tougher place.) If this is the case, it's great cuz it means, i just have to keep riding and I'll get even better!
Has this happened to anyone else when you worked your way up from n00b status?

I'd take a day or two off if you haven't tried that yet. See what results that gets you and use process of elimination from there.
Rest will usually do the trick for me. Or sometimes I just get in a funk from eating/sleeping/feeling badly during the week.
Oh and the simple answer to your question is, yes, you are nuts. We all are.

You just need to take a couple of days a week to recover.

YES!
Oh, sorry. I didn't read your post first.
I had a similar issue happen when I used to be on hypertension meds. I was riding and improving daily. Then, one day, it was like I lost steam. It kept up for about a week. Turns out all that exercise had removed my need to medically lower my bp and now it was plummeting. Talked with doc and dropped meds, never to go back. Strength went back up and there was much rejoicing (on my part).
Oh yeah, rest once in a while.

whew. Ok, I'm getting new tires on Friday. I'll hold out on a ride till then. I only rode about 7-8 miles today, so it's still a pretty easy day for me.
Thanks as always for the advice. And yeah, I know I'm nuts. just cuz I'm not nuts this time, doesn't mean that I ain't nuts!!! Then again, sane people are BOOOOOORING

I like the brick wall analogy best. Building a body is like building a brick wall. Working out tears down 10 rows. Resting (afterwards) build 11 rows back up. If you work out again too soon you'll tear down more rows than you build up. If you don't supply bricks and mortar you won't build anything.

The thing is, I DO eat tons of protien. I always make sure to rest my muscles properly after weight lifting. I guess I just underestimated the work-out i get from cycling.

I find I perform better when I ride every other day. 2 days in a row and I notice a drop in performance. But thats just me, and I am a sprinter.

I'm going throught the exact same thing right now.
Rest doesn't mean just taking a break from biking; i believe it also means make sure you get enough sleep as well.

It sounds like yourjust going out and riding hard every single day. In addition to rest which has begin discussed, you needtovary your workout. Just going out and busting a time trial effort every ride will make you plateau pretty quickly.
You need to vary your workout, and get acquainted with the concept of intervals.

I try to ride 3 maybe 4 days in a row and then rest a day....I'll also ride some days harder than others....the rest days really help...If I'm in a deep funk, maybe 2 or even 3 rest days in a row.....also I try to eat on the healthy side and if I slip up and eat a bunch of fatty, greasy food(which I love!)...I pay for it in the next couple of days.

I've heard something about getting off the bike for a weekend and just gorging on pizza and beer. Come Monday, you should be a beast on the bike. Let us know how it goes!

Take a day or two off .... and go buy a computer, and maybe a heart rate monitor.
Exercise breaks your muscles down ... rest builds them up again stronger than they were. If you never rest, your muscles will continually be broken down, and never built up.

Well, my day off was great. Tomorrow it's going to be raining, and i baby my bike (she's 35 years old, and made of steel.), so I won't be riding her tomorrow either. A forced day off if you will.
I'll change up my work out schedule to be a bit better for my muscles now. Thanks fo the input. I think i just had so much fun hammering it down the trail every day that I forgot what I was doing to myself!!!
