Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

don't wanna derail the thread too much from the scenic photos (although i guess it's my fault for putting that photo in there...some folks asked for one), but i'm really loving the new bike.

i test-rode a number of other "top-end" carbon + Ti bikes and can appreciate what they do well; however, they were not for me.

i was specifically looking for a bike that was:
(a) light (i do lots of climbing);
(b) comfortable enough to ride for 200 miles;
(c) responsive, but not stiff for stiffness's sake (they recently chip-sealed a favorite ride (with the coarse stuff, no less!), which turned an awesome 25-miler into an unenjoyable ride on an alu+carbon bike; this bike didn't make me feel like i was riding on glass, but it made it enjoyable enough that a few times i've ridden it twice in succession);
(d) a better bike than i am a rider, so i can push myself/improve and keep the bike for a long, long time.

i personally don't care about brands or looks (though i do prefer low-key and am actually thinking of putting electrical tape over some of the logos -- i'm sure that's not cool around here), so as long as the bike met my needs above.

it helped that i got a deal i couldn't refuse (no way i could afford the full prices of these things).

i live at the base of the tetons (jackson hole region of wyoming).

as for 200 people..... our town has a bit more than that. it's sort of a realtor scam so they can sell the small-town experience more easily instead of updating the population on the sign for, oh, the last 2 censuses.

not sure what that is referring to -- i assume it's a bike ride and not a ski/board tour, right?

it snowed in the valley last night...will this be a good year?

i ski 150-180 days/year, so that tends to be all-consuming in the winter. still hope to ride the bike on my trainer a bit in the winter to keep my knee loose.

enjoy your trip!

Depending on the route that Amber chooses and the weather, the TdW difficulty can vary considerably. Much depends on the heat and the WIND. She chooses a different route every year. Registration fills up within a few hours after it opens. Everyone that I have talked to says it is well organized and supported. There is a website: https://www.cyclewyoming.org/tour.htm.

Back to the topic: too bad you all could not have seen Jackson when it was a real cow town. I first remember going there (from my home in SE Wyoming) in 1958. It has REALLY changed and I'm not sure for the better.

It still remains, however, one of the most scenic spots in the U.S.

wow great photo's.

As a flatlander living in Holland we have no mountains at all.
That's why I adore bridges.

must have been amazing then.

i've only been around for 14 years, and while the change has been dramatic in that time, the pace of change in the last 5 years has been astonishing.

that said, as a newcomer myself, it would be disingenuous for me to hope that the growth slows. rather, i just work to make sure that the growth that does occur happens in a responsible way so as not to spoil the very thing we hold so dear.

jackson hole has never been easy to get to -- by plane or by car -- or live in. i think the fact that people have to work for it makes them appreciate it more/treat the environment with more respect, even when just passing through.

i still feel lucky every day and spend about 1/2 of every ride just gawking at the scenery. i never take it for granted.

Great pics!

Those point and shoot digitals are great little cameras aren't they? I've started bringing mine on every ride lately.
