Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winter Cycling

I am starting to consider the idea of trying to bike at least a little in the early winter. I live in Ottawa and once the full winter blows in I am definitely not going to ride outside -40 degree C and higher with a wind chill doesn't appeal to me.
Anyways I am curious what people have used for jackets in the winter. I am interested in purchasing either a pearl izumi gavia or barrier jacket and was wondering how people have found them. I am a little skinny guy and I freeze my butt off relatively quickly.

Thanks all in advance.
Joel

Cycling shorts and Wool tights, arm warmers worn under long sleeved jersey wool cycling socks (available at Longscycle.com). Boot covers. If it's really cold wear a short sleeved jersey under the long sleeved one followed by a warm cycling jacket. I also pack my thin windbreaker incase. A few layers work best. You don't want to overheat, (you can always open a zipper or two that way), you will perspire and once you perspiration cools next to your skin, you core temp will remain low. Start out riding short durations to get a feel for personal endurace. I have done 30 minutes in 20% temps before my toes and fingers began to portest. At least that has worked for me. Also, if you have a beater bike, I would retire the good bike until the spring. Road salts, can be murder on a nice paint job.

For a jacket, I use an Arcteryx Gamma SV. Windchill isn't really much of an issue because you shouldn't have much exposed skin anyway.

Indeed. Check the winter forum for more.
