I am easily distracted - a small problem

This past weekend I rode in a three day charity ride. I'm an average rider in less than great shape. My goal was simply to ride and have fun.

Riding with us were two former members of the US and T Moblie cyling teams, Kim Bruckner Baldwin and Mari Holden. Kim and I had spent a fair amount of time taking before the ride and on the first night and were somewhat friendly.

As we lined up to start day 2 (85 miles, very hilly in the first half), I found myself in the front next to Kim. I thought I'd heard the organizer say we were going to stop in a mile or two as a group for local community recognition. I said to my friend, "this is likely my only chance to lead the race."

We start out and Kim and I take the lead spots. In a couple of minutes, we're ahead of the next of the 97 riders by several hundred yards and are pushing roughly a 20-22 MPH pace (much more than I'm used to). After 10 minutes or so I'm feeling close to spent. I ask Kim "aren't we supposed to stop on Main Street and restart the ride?" She replies "We started the ride 10 minutes ago." Facing the first large climb of the day, I tell her it's time for me to drop back into my comfort zone and am passed on the hill by perhaps 50 riders. When I get to the top I feel like my tank is close to empty, all because I jumped out quickly with the admittedly very cute pro rider. I paid for it all day. But if I had to do it over again, I think I would have spent those 10 minutes riding in front with Kim all over again! :D [She's on the left in the podium shot.]

A friend of mine had delusions of greatness with mtn biker Cristina Begy.

He rode one of 2 consecutive laps of 24 hours in the ol' pueblo with her, and hung on for it. (First lap time of 1:07ish) Then paid with another painful lap that was in the 1:50ish range.

For those roadies unfamiliar with the publication dirt rag, here is a famous cover with her (or at least her legs) on it...

Would he have done it again...probably...
