Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Name that noise...

Sounds like a bird chirping, very high pitched but not really loud. In fact, for a while I thiught it WAS a bird chirping until I realised I was still hearing it 5 miles later. It only makes the noise when pedaling, not coasting. No brake rubs, shoe or pedal problems. Ideas?

Chain is new, but well oiled. Is it possible it's the newness of the chain? In fact, entire bike is new. I wouldn't think grease would be an issue on a new bike...

if it's not the chain, put a drop of lube in each of your rear derailleur pulley's bearings/bushings.

As mentioned it is almost definitely a link in the chain, or derailler pulley squeek.

This can occur as well if the chain is a type that uses a directional "quick-link". I personally have experienced this with a Wippermann link that was installed in the incorrect direction.

Does it happen once every pedal revolution, or less often. If it's per-pedal revolution, it's in the crank area, if not, somewhere else.

I can get a really weird chirping noise on my bike. If the middle strap on my shoes is a little loose, it rubs against the crank and makes a really loud chirp on each revolution of the pedals.

Along those lines if it was more of a click then it is usually your heel hitting he cable end from out of the top of the front derailler.

The chirp though is almost definitely chain or pulley bushing.

A few drops of prolink in my rear derailleur pulley's bearings/bushings seems to have done the trick. Thanks!

I think you're describing the exact noise I had on my last ride (and it got worse as the miles added up), so I'm going to try the exact solution when I get back home.

Nice timing for this thread, btw.

Man I have the EXACT same problem. My bike makes a noise that I always thought sounded like a bird chirping. I'm 100% positive that it only occurs when I "pull up" on my left pedal. I've got mountain pedals, presumably really crappy and cheap ones, as the kind folks at my LBS gave them to me free after I bought my bike and shoes. I'm not about to go in there and tinker with the workings of the pedal, but I am gonna put some kind of lube in there to see if that helps.

And by that, you mean grease, not lube, correct?

Another problem that I've had, that makes a funny sound, is the saddle rails. Not sure what the problem is exactly, but I narrowed the sound down after determining that it only occured when seated and pedalling. It also happens if I press down on the saddle very hard, or torque it (rather, attempt to) from side to side.

Guessing a Specialized? My Specialized saddles creak like crazy. Sometimes putting a lube like Phils tenacious where the rails go into the seat base can help.

Have you tried tightening your chainring bolts?

had a similar noise coming from my right pedal. yanked the pedal, cleaned and lubed the thread and that did the trick.

My noise became constant. It would pause a bit right after a shift, but would come back within a few seconds of pedaling. It sounded a lot like those cheap bird calls that you can buy at places like a National Geographic store ( https://audubonbirdcall.com/ ).

I've decided that it's the rear derailleur only after turning my head to the side to try to locate the noise. It seemed like it kept coming from the rear no matter which way I turned my head. It definitely wasn't in the crank, and it would change depending on chain speed, not wheel or cassette speed.

I'm usually pretty good at figuring out which direction a noise is coming from, but this one still took a while.
