Personal Lubrication...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Personal Lubrication...

Is pro link still considered the best chain lube or has something come along and knocked it off the mountain? I see more and more space age, high-tech, ptfe polymer stuff in the stores now and have been tempted to try something new.

Astroglide.

Now that that's out of the way, I use Boeshield T-9.

Never thought I'd read about Astroglide on a bike forum! Now, that's funny!

Seriously, 3:1 mineral spirits and motor oil. I like Dumonde but, it's pricey.

When you say, “3:1 mineral spirits and motor oil” I assume you mean Pro Link Chain Lube. How did you know the make-up?

When you say “pricey”, how much is Dumonde BHP Chain Oil and where can you purchase it?

Just curious, lets say you get 3000 miles out of chain before it is stretched and has to be replaced. How does a lubricant prolong a chains life?

I clean my chain with WD40, wipe it dry and let it dry a little longer. Then I apply Tri-Flow and then again, wipe down the chain.

Mineral Spirits work faster on a chain and better. Just take 2 of those infamous red plastic cups, some duct tape, toss your chain in one, fill halfway with mineral spirits, put the second cup on top. Duct tape together (1 strip around the middle, then 1 on each side of the first) I've also tested how long the spirits take to get through the plastic cup, about half an hour of staying still and when you go to pick up the cup the part with the spirits stays on the ground, but since you are moving it around it will not eat through the cups. Nice, cheap solution to cleaning your chain. Wipe it down, put it back on the bike and use your favorite lubrication.

Good god man, just use an empty Gatoraid bottle or similar product.

i don't keep those around the house, i tend to just toss them in the recycling when I'm done. On that note, i don't think I've ever had a bottle of gatorade in my house. Always buy it halfway through a long ride. And well i'm sorry i don't keep trash in my house... The method I use works, and I'll just pick up whatever container I find and use it. But that was one of my more creative methods, but you have to go and complain about it.

I use the Dumonde Lite and am extremely satisfied. A bit "cleaner" then others but it requires more frequent applications.

I am using 3 part mineral spirits to 1 part motor oil for chain lube. Not to clean it. And no I do not mean Pro Link. Have used it before and have absolutely nothing bad to say about it.

At my LBS Dumonde is more expensive than Tri-Flow and Pro Link. I have not spend any time trying to find a lower price on line or elsewhere. It's been a while since I bought it as I've been using the home brew now for some time. To give you a WAG, Tri-Flow and Pro Link 4oz is about $8USD. Dumonde was over $11 I believe.

I get about 2000 miles out of Dura Ace or Ultegra chains. I measure them for stretch. I can't comment on how lube affects chain stretch as I've never been invloved is design or manufacturing of them. Ask Sheldon Brown in the Bicycle Mechanics forum. I'm sure you find plenty of graphs and data detailing the pros and cons of using lube or not regarding chain stretch. Lube prolongs the life of the drivetrain in general, so I use it.

If using WD-40 works for you, cool. I find it attracts dust and dirt more than anything. I have found cleaning your chain so you get every piece of dirt out of the rollers is futile. I'm more concerned with keeping the surface of the chain that contacts the ring/cog teeth is clean. YMMV.

I've tried Dumonde but don't understand what all the fuss is about. I now either use Boeshield when it's dry out, or homebrew in the rain.

BTW, Dumonde is much cheaper at the motorcycle shop than at any bike shop.

I've been experimenting with Pedro's Road Rage for the last couple of weeks. I've been using dry lubes (primarily my homebrew wax), but I don't need the dry for my road bike, so I wanted to try something wet. Other than the occasional mess on my calf, it seems to be doing fine. I just did my weekly cleaing/relubing of my drivetrain, too.

Single malt scotch.

It's a crappy chain lube but on the bright side... it the only known cure for exposure to Ebola.
