Indeed. After a few months of training, time trailing, etc, I manage a ~20mph split at the local mid-week TT, and also ~20 on my triathlon bike splits. 24mph == amazing.

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
I've read stories on here of some random guy on a MTB blasting past a group of roadies (one of the roadies was the person writing the post), and the guy said he was just riding for fitness.
I don't think a 24 mph average is impossible for a big, strong guy who's done his share of cardio. My max average was only about 20.

Things just aren't adding up.. 2 weeks and has 3 bikes... no comment about the computer used? what size wheel it's set for etc... hilly area... can you point out your hilly area to us on mapmyride.com i'm dying to see your route. Are these rides solo? with a group? feed us more please.... one more thing... if you've been riding for 2 weeks.. why say i'm 17 do i have something going here? that sounds odd... it's like you KNOW that a 17 yr old kid doing 24 is good... it just looks like a troll post... and i just fell for it... damn kid... you're good..

I hit a 22mph average for 2 hours a week after I started. Granted, that was in pan-flat central IL on a windless day, but it's not that impressive. Being 5'7" and having a decent position on the bike make me more efficient than most.
24mph however, for a guy that big, requires some serious power production.

That, or with your living in New Mexico.
Around here (New York City) you have to ride through 5 miles of traffic jams and traffic lights just to get to a road where you can wind it up to 24mph, much less average that. My wife likes to re-start her cyclocomputer once we get out into the 'burbs; makes here average speeds look much more impressive! But I'm kinda diehard about this. My ride starts and ends at my front door, and if that means my real average speed for a day of mostly 24+ mph sprinting comes out to be 15mph, well, that's what it was.

I'm just now hitting 19 mph avg. on moderately hilly solo rides after 3 months back to riding following a 17 year layoff. I'm 46.

Just for the record, this would actually result in an average of 21.7mph. Average speed is total distance divided by total time, not the average of the speeds. You spend a lot more time at 17mph than 30 if you are traveling the same distance, so this drags the average speed down.

For a simpler-to-understand calculation (instead of a formula), imagine the first trip was 17 miles long and he finished in 1 hour (headwind). Avg speed: 17 mph. He turned around and did the same 17mile trip @ 30mph (tailwind). The same trip took him only 0.57 hour. Total ride time: 1.57 hours. Total distance: 34 miles (2 of 17). Avg speed: 21.7 mph (34/1.57).

Looks like you have some competition for the TdF in a few years Ryan. Better get out there and start training.

Throw the stick!!!!
I live in WV, race in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and Indiana. These have all been road races, never done a crit. I don't like the idea of driving five or six hours (round trip) to race 45 minutes so I stay with the longer road races.

I think I could be able to do a 24mph average on a flat 20 miles. I'm not sure, I've never really pushed myself over a long distance while solo.

I'm sure that you can do it. I can do it on my road bike and I'm an old fart. 24 mph is my target speed when doing 2x20's. I pushed it once to 25 miles at that pace, but then I didn't walk right the next day. (Damn, that hurt!)

Throw the stick!!!!
Doing my 30 minute time trial to find my threshold wattage last year I averaged 23.1 mph. This was for 30 minutes at 297 watts and it hurt! It wasn't perfectly level but it was as close as I could find in WV.

Why don't you just move to Cleveland? You race up here enough anyways.

I don't have a powertap on the Zipps so I can't make an accurate comparison.

If it wasn't for family, work, and getting ready to start building a new house I would consider it. However, I have feeling I'm not going to be racing for a year or so and I'll be lucky to even get on a bike once every week or two for the next year.

i bet you will be able to ride more than that. you always seem to have stuff going on, but you fit your cycling in somehow. besides, once you get that 14 pound bike completed, you won't be able to keep yourself off of it.

First off would like to say I'm not "trolling". Far from it.
Maybe the stop watch messed up or some other *****. I had a stop watch and I was at about 50 minutes and 20 something seconds. And from there I did some math and thusly got ~24 mph. I rode the 20 miles without stopping since I was on a bike path.
The S&M dirt bike is a BMX bike i have ridden for 3+ years. I have been on bikes since i was 3. I said this is my first 2 weeks on Road Bike and I do not yet own the Sputnik. But i had some money and wanted to get into cycling so thusly i bought a road bike and then 2 weeks later wanted to order a trackbike/fixedgear to commute on and to have some fun on.
Maybe I'm right and I found something after 17 years that I'm decent at and maybe I'm wrong, and if I am oh well, does it affect you in any way?
