Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale bikes cheaper than last year

so I'm looking at the new cannondale CAAD 9 5 and last years CAAD 9 Optimo 2. Both seem equally equiped at first glance. However the 2008 CAAD 9 5 is about 300 bucks lesss.

What am I missing? Did they lower the quality of some of the components?

The optimo 3 for 07 had 105, the CAAD9 5 looks the same. What is the price? 1300? That's how much I paid for mine, I bought it for the 08 price I believe.

A friend of a friend who works at a chain LBS said the new Cannondales are a couple hundred bucks lower than last year. His thought on it is that it was intentional to give them a little bit more of a edge as imported (yeah, i read those threads too) bikes edged up this year. The price he told me for a DA Super6 was awesome, it's high on my test ride list now if not the top.

I've always felt that Cannondales were overpriced. Now they seem to be right in line with the rest of the industry.

It costs more to make the frame in the states than mainland China or Taiwan.

Nope. They still make em in the states. I think the only frames they source from Asia are the Carbon Synapse and some lower end MTB.

I wonder about that because the usual "Handmade in the USA" seems to be missing from the low end CAAD9.

They were moved to the inside of the seat stay. Im guessing because next year they will be completely gone and it wont be as noticable to the customer.
