Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sold my midlevel bike....looking for a weight weenie bike now

I sold my mountain bike and I currently ride a weak shimano sora roadbike. I've enjoyed cycling enough to put down the money for a weight weenie bike. It has to be carbon though, I see a lot of ti bikes that are light but I've always liked how carbon feels after a long day in the saddle. My budget is 3500, maybe as much as 4500k if that extra thousand will make a difference. I am trying to buy all used on ebay or craigslist so it may take a few months to get everything. Any suggestions would be helpful. I'm looking to go as light as I can for the money. My goal is at least 14.5lbs without pedals, water bottle cage for a size 55-56 bike

Also don't care about brand prestige or where it is made, just as long as it is quality and light.

The Cervelo R3 SL or, carbon Soloist are popular choices where weight and pure performance are the key attributes being sought after.

You might be money ahead to buy a NEW or a complete(already built)used bike, instead of piece by piece.

Get just about whatever frame you like. Worry more about components and wheels, because that's where you'll save the most weight.

FWIW, my 58cm CAAD9 weighs in just under 16 lbs w/o pedals rolling on Rolf Elans and could lose a touch more with ZG brakes, Nokon cables and a new handlebar.
I think I wanted to spend about $3000 for my setup and ended up sinking over $4k into it pretty quickly, so remember whatever you budget will probably get pushed up once you get upgradeitis.

You can't beat a R3-SL for frame weight. Although I figured out how to get my old 2001 Trek weighing in at 19.9lbs down to 14.1lbs by changing all but the headset, frame, and seatclamp.

Or replicate this build if you're a serious weight-weenie.

IMHO, there's not a lot of difference between the top end bikes of the major manufacturers. Thus my approach would be to 1) set a price range you're willing to spend; 2) Identify the LBS's in your area that you like from a service point of view; 3) Test ride the bikes that those shops or shop carry in your price range, 4) Pick the one that fits best, feels best to you.

That said if you don't care about brand prestige, you should definitely consider Giant as one to test ride. Giant's can often be a good deal because the brand doesn't have cache, but they are also arguably the best in the world when it comes to manufacturing carbon fiber bicycles.

Liar. They didn't have bikes in medieval times. If they did the classic and vintage forum would have been all over it.

Check out some of the Fuji's. You can probably find a left over 2007 Team Issue in your price range. Without pedals they come in at a little over 15 pounds. Once you get below 15 pounds you get into some serious cash. My 14.2 pound bike would cost right around $8,000 (retail).

Whaaaaat? 7-8 lbs? I don't believe it. Or I do, but it collapses as soon as you sit on it.

What size bike do you ride? I send you a PM with a weight weenie bike I have for sale...

I just purchased the Seven Elium SG. It is is a dream to ride....I feel like it is a true all arounder. As of two days ago, I rode a Scott CR1 for 'speedy' rides, and a 1985 Richard Sachs for Sundays cruises...the Elium appears to bridge the gap as it is less compact than the Scott but weighs a mere 15lbs with pedals and cages...

So, for all of you looking for the Elium, I give it 2 thumbs up!
