"Muscled" cyclists

1 Attachment(s)
This guy's leg development is pretty remarkable.
I understand he is a sprinter in a velodrome and not an endurance athlete. Just thought it was pretty interesting to see a cycling athlete who was so heavily muscled.

(Encouraging for me really as I recently incorporated cycling into my training, which used to be mostly fast twitch power/strength activity. And...many thanks to advice from some of you guys, even at 5'6" 190 lbs., can climb hills much better then I used to- even while my bodyweight slooooooowly comes down. There's hope for us meatheads yet.)

pretty normal for track riders.

personally, i'm happy to have a neck.

edzo 10-12-07 10:52 AM

'drome sprinters need to be big to have a torso to push against

he'd be too big for a classic race and be a contender, but could prob
finish a 1 day not too hilly in the top 10 with a team. I wouldn't want
to challenge him anywhere at any distance. track cyclists know secrets
of pain

derath 10-12-07 10:52 AM

If you don't have to race uphill I would imagine it isn't as big of a deal.

I think his beard offsets the aero benefits of his helmet.

Lots of those guys on the track. Keirin, team sprint, sprint...

They can't do **** on the road though, generally speaking.

Except catch you in the first 500 m, pull you off your bike, and break you.

MIN 10-12-07 11:25 AM

What? This is like comparing a 100m sprinter to Alberto Salazar. Fool.

You mean the "old Marathon runner sponsored by Nike"? ;)

Exactly. That's why I said I "understand he was a sprinter not an endurance athlete".
Just thought it was interesting.

I'll bet he could still ride 99 percent of the people on this forum off his wheel, even uphill.

I'm going to disagree.

I've seen those body types do quite well in a criterium.

Marty Nothstein (gold medal in the match sprint, 2000 olympics) road for navigators a couple years ago. So yeah, he wasn't a world class roadie, but he was national class. And if you want to see some big legs:

Ivan Dominquez really isn't that big. Bigger than your average NRC pro but not a 200m guy. He's more of a kilo man than he is a sprinter, on the track, by the way.

He's listed as 5'9" 160.

My abdomen muscles have strengthened significantly since I've started climbing. I'm not sure if that is what naturally happens, but just thought I would contribute my slight muscle gains.

It's not a six-pack, but it's definitely much better looking than a couple of months ago.
