Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hurt my back...damit

So yesterday I was sitting down...and this pain....sort of like a shock, shot up my back. I thought it was weird.....I have put my body through quite a bit this year considering how I was health wise last year. but no issues at all this year.....now that things are winding down...I have dropped my mileage a bit but not the intensity...in fact I am pretty happy with me first real year at cycling.....looking forward to the winter and then getting an early start next year.....ANYWAY...

Yesterday I did a 20 mile ride after my back incident and I thought it was going to be ok...but as the night wore on it got worse and worse....today I kept telling myself to quit being a wimp...it was hard to be up enough to go to the bathroom..I have Biofreeze all over my lower back at this point and a few Ibuprofen in me and I can sort of function....so what happened? Pinched nerve? If so what do I do? I don't want to go to the doctor..but your opinions would help...the weather was great today and I wanted to get a nice 70 in or something like that but I couldn't even sleep last night much less move at 6 am....

Thanks for your opinion....

Having gone through a similar experience of what happened to you, here are my two cents.
1. Stop doing any exercise inmediately. Many of us learned the wrong lesson from idiotic High School coaches that played it very macho and taught many of us that exercising it off was the real manly thing to do. Girls would have stayed home...
2. Go see a Dr. and I'm sure he'll make you get X-Rays or an MRI.
3. Hopefully it will be just muscle pain but you might also have a bulging disc, dont make it worse by over using it. It could turn into an herniated disc, and that my friend is another story. Ask me, I did not go to ck it in time kept windsurfing and presto... L4 and L5 are goners....
Whatever happens let us know... Good Luck .. I lead a super normal life with absolutely no back pain for almost 7 years now...

Chiropractor, find one and go see him/her.

You'd be amazed at the difference just a few adjustments can make.

I see a chiropractor once a week and also see a neurologist for cervical epidurals, because I ride long distance they do help me out alot for my bulging disk on my neck area, but then again those are my treatments.

Good Luck.

Hugs, NYCJAZIE.

I feel your pain, brother...

https://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=351824

Go to an orthopedist immediately and don't screw around with it.

Any pain or numbness in your extremities? If not, good. If so, then then it's probably radicular pain which means a herniated or ruptured disc.

Also, if the pain is positional - which means it hurts more when you move certain ways, then it's also probably muscular.

The good news is that cycling seldom aggravates back problems. When I was in pain so bad I couldn't move and morphine wasn't even working, the doc joked that if I could somehow get on my bike, I'd probably feel better. Of course that was impossible and even if it were, there's be no way to get off.

For what it's worth, in the two years since I had a ruptured disc in my neck and lower back spasms that put me in the hospital, I've biked just over 10000 miles.

All in all, biking makes my back feel better. Any pain I have is usually caused by sitting, driving, or sleeping.

I second the chiropractor and make sure you stretch! Hams, quads, glutes, various back stretches, etc. Makes a MAJOR difference in how the back feels. Ab work does wonders as well.

Well here is an update.....I did not listen to anyone on here.....sorry....I went a rode today...50 miles....I actually feel a bit better but to listen to some of your stories worries me.

I have no numbness in my extremities....it is odd...I can ride my bike but barely put my socks on....in the last day I have felt better so we will see what tomorrow brings...

I am a no insurance sort of guy...I don't do work where I stress my self much....mostly in my head..I just cycle for exercise as well...nothing else....SOOOO doctors scare me....as do acronyms like MRI...

My girlfriend does some work for a local chiropractor. She works most of her stuff on trade so I might be able to go see him. I will see how I feel in the morning.....

Thank you all for words...I would rather be safe than sorry but getting 500 bucks in doctor visits will not cut it for me....I will see what I can swing..

That's why I like my chiropractor, $50 a month and I can see him as often as I want.

It doesn't hurt to see an orthopedist and get an x-ray
