Want to create a cue sheet for your 200 mile ride in <3 minutes?
Most people by now know that Google Maps allows you to customize a route by dragging the blue line around to select the roads you want to take instead of the roads it has chosen. This makes creating a bike route very fast and easy. Problem is, it's in Google Maps and you want to get this route out in a printable cue sheet, or into your Garmin, or into bikely or mapmyride so an elevation profile is generated.
Well, here you go.
Step 0 (only done once). Create a favorite/bookmark with the URL exactly as below:
javascript: (function(){var%20script=document.createElement('script');script.src='https://mysite.verizon.net/kyleyost/googlemap_cuesheet.js';document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(script);})()
Step 1. Go to Google Maps and make your route. Drag the blue line around to get the roads you want and rt-click to use "Add A Destination here". Very intuitive and easy.
Step 2. Click your favorite created in Step 0
Step 3. There's your cue sheet. Copy/Paste it into a text editor and save it. If you want GPX so you can import into bikely or MapMyRide, complete with cue sheet and elevation profile, select Bikely GPX. If you want to load the route into your Garmin, complete with Right, Left, Straight, U-Turn coursepoints for each turn, select Garmin CRS.
Easy, fast, brainless. Enjoy.

Damn that is cool. What license is the code? Can I modify it and/or distribute it?

Pretty cool idea/script!
Another option is to use veloroutes.org - it has auto-routing AND auto-magic cue-sheets, although the cues are definitely less accurate than Google's.
Happy mappin'!
(p.s. i run veloroutes.org, so if you have any suggestions shoot 'em my way!)

The code that parses the Google page is based on code from GMapToGPX at www.elsewhere.org by Josh. Without this code to interpret the proprietary (and frequently changing) Google page, it would be impossible to create the cue sheet, GPX, CRS outputs. So, before you modify or distribute this code, be certain to contact Josh. All the code that takes the track info from the parsed Google page and converts it into the various formats is mine, and you are free to do what you please with that.
Personally, I would recommend against playing with this code. It does not use the supported Google API, but rather parses the page sent by Google to your browser and Google changes this often, breaking scriplets like this, and it is undocumented.

Okay. Mostly I just want to change the output a bit to be a bit prettier and easier to read (e.g. alternating row colors, I like arrows and symbols instead of words like Right and Left, and so on...).
I will take a look, and if I end up modifying your code, I will let you know and I will ask Josh if I intend to distribute any modification of his code.

@JayC: see the "Try the auto-routing beta" link on the left-nav.
Or just go directly: https://beta.veloroutes.org/bikemaps/ (Even thought it says 'beta' it will still save your route to the main DB of routes)

Nice progress on the autorouting. I like how it doesnt bog down as the route gets longer. Now if it only added turn points in......

You can go to https://www.mapmyride.com too. You have to join but it free. It gives you elevations, routes and cue sheets.

If you do that, I'd like to see the result. I would like to modify the output a little too, but it's not really important to me (not enough to spend much time on).

Bikely gives you elevations and cue sheets and doesn't bog down with large numbers of points.
Nothing beats Google Maps for a fast and easy way to "draw" a route though. As long as your route is on roads that you could drive on, by far the easiest way to get a route into bikely or mapmyride is to draw it in Google Maps, use my script to convert it into GPX or Garmin CRS, and then upload GPX into bikely or mapmyride.
The days of click, click, clicking to draw points are behind us. Even with autorouting in veloroutes or mapmyride, it's much easier to do in Google Maps and the resulting cue sheet better and more accurate.

I got it working, I think. Seems like the other autorouting sites, tho.. about 40 miles it, it starts to get really sluggish. Add a destination and it takes forever for it to update.
Maybe I need to try it in Firefox. I cant create a route longer than 38 miles before it chokes up.

Well, I have begun my hacks to the cue sheets. My mods are ugly, really ugly, and it is still a work in progress, but here is an alternate bookmark to use. I will be changing stuff out for a while still while I tweak it, but I think it is in okay enough shape to share:
Bookmarklet-
What will change:
1. I will be shrinking the text down for a smaller print out, the larger size is just while I work on it.
2. Will add some credits for everyone who actually came up with the real code.
3. More cosmetic changes and better icons.
I would love to get a small version of the map with numbered points to go along with the cue sheet, but that would be substantive programming, which I am not all that great at...
UPDATE: I gave up on this because I just didn't have time.

Don't know what to tell you JayC. I have created 150 mile routes in maps.google.com with no problem whatsoever. It's fast and responsive for me. It's fastest and easiest to tell Google to drive from start to point furthest away and then drag blue line around to get it to follow roads you want. Then "Add a Destination" back home again and again drag line around.

Cue sheets are for wussy.
Cue Sheets? There's no Cue Sheets in bike racing!
