Another Newbie - Love the forum
This is my second post to the board and just thought I would say hi. A recent convert from mountain biking, I am picking up my first road bike this week. It is safe to say, I have been at a crossroads for the last two years. I love mountain biking, but as my friends got older (and married with children) they didn't have the 4 necessary hours to drive up the mountain, ride a bunch & then head back let alone time for drinks afterwards. And I guess I as I got older, I became a little more worried about hammering down a hill with limited cell phone coverage & basically crash in the middle of a remote place.
I was transfered offices earlier this year and 8 guys in my office all have road bikes that they ride during lunch & after work. Talking with them helped to get me interested. I have been lurking on this board since July & ordered a bike in August. We have several bike clubs in the area that do group rides 3 days a weeks.
Couple things about me:
1) I know how to use the search function. I particularly find the shave the legs debates interesting as I get to listen to it bunch from the guys in the office. Seems they are like the board (half do / half don't).
2) I am hoping to ride my first Century by April of next year. I think it is doable, but having never really spent a lot of time on a road bike, I guess I'll find out in a month or so.
3) I had no idea nutrition was so important. It makes sense, just never really spent anytime thinking about it. That is one element I definitely am going to have to learn more about.
4) I have no idea what a Fred is, but I am sure I am probably headed that direction.
Thanks for listening.

I don't know where you're from but the two types of cycling don't have to be mutually exclusive. If you may be in area where there are trails close enough for you to go when you just want to get away. Sometimes, I miss mountain biking. Sometimes, I miss road biking. Both are just different enough scratch a different itch. Of course, I'm lucky enough I can either load my bike and be to a number of trails within a 1/2 hour or even ride to a trail from my house in the same amount of time.
Anyway, you may find you like to do both too, don't rule it out. Welcome to BF. Have fun out there.

Thanks everyone for your notes.
Since I still figuring out the quote deal, I just try to make some comments: I live in Greenville, SC (western part of the state). I am hoping with this new venture, I will meet some people that mountain bike also so I will be able to do both. We have a local place that has cut some new trails and that is entertaining from a riding standpoint.
Never really thought about dodging cars instead of trees, but I guess this is going to be as dangerous as mt biking except I have at least a 25% chance someone will stop or at least call an ambulance.
And as far as the saving account comment, no kidding. I figured, hey buy a bike, maybe a new pair of shoes, but wow there is so much other stuff you can get. Currently putting together a winter wardrobe.
