Zipp play
Yes, I searched, got nada.
Got my new set of used zipp 404s ready to go...new shimano drive hub, cleaned, lubed, torqued everything to zipp specs. The LBS guy checked every spoke and corrected a few, true as can be, solid. They felt great spinning in my hands but I just clamped them into the frame and they have some side to side play, much more than I am used to in bike wheels, and kinda rattly too. Zipp claims their hubs will have some play in them because of their bearing design, but how much is normal? I had already ordered new front & rear bearing sets from zipp anyway, maybe the new bearings will resolve some of the "play" in the hubs when I get them installed. I don't see how anything else could be worn on these wheels. Any thoughts? Thanks. |
How much side to side play is there?
I've seen quite a few ksyriums with like, 2-3mm side to side play at the brake pads. |

Tightening hub on Zipp wheels? I've got an 808 rear wheel that has some lateral play when secured in the dropouts. I imagine I would need some special tool to tighten the hub?? Thanks. Josh: Proper torque on that hub is 88 in lbs for the rear using 2x5mm allen keys. At that torque, the hub should have a small amount of play (0.002", which extrapolates out to 0.010-0.015" at the rim), it is a sign that the balls are perfectly aligned as what you are feeling is the ability of the balls to rock laterally in the races as there is no lateral preload in the system. http://www.zipp.com/Support/AskJosh/...4/Default.aspx |

I had that issue too. I was getting some rub on the rear brake pads. I thought it was play in the bearings, and replaced them. Turned out it was flex in the frame.
As stated above the play goes away when the bearings are loaded, so unless your having problems as you ride the bike , I wouldn't worry about it. |

Thanks guys. I haven't ridden them yet, so no assessment of the bearings under load. They are on a new Soloist.
Like I said, I have new bearings on the way from zipp, which I was going to replace anyway since these are used wheels. The rear bearings have a little catch in them but the fronts are glass smooth. Both wheels have about equal play by hand feel. I noticed it initially when I heard the wheels rattle when the bike was lightly bounced on the floor. Either way, new rollers all around on the way, should help a little, I'll let the shop guy check them on the frame too. |
Zipp play-update
Got the new front & rear bearings from zipp installed on my 404's. Fixed it, no more loose wheels, just needed new bearings. I would say any looseness that is left is intended in their design.
I put about 40 miles on them this weekend....very solid true wheels, I like 'em. |
