Sram rival crank any good?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sram rival crank any good?

Building a bike up. Is the Sram rival crankset any good I saw that the weight is 860 + 98 grams for the bottom bracket...kinda heavy.

I don't know why anyone would buy that crankset....it's the weakest component in the Sram line up, same goes for their force crankset. I heard that the chain rings are not that great during shifting but then again I haven't used sram crankset....I used their shifters and drive train before. Ultegra is cheaper, lighter, and look way nicer. Campy is nice too but expensive if you're on a budget. I highly recommend the 10sp 105 crankset with after market rings for the look.

The best way to build a cheap but light group:

Sram Rival shifters
Sram force rear derailleur
Campy Record Front Derailleur (can be had used real cheap on ebay)
Ultegra everything else.

PM JayC....I think he used a Sram crankset.

Go FSA. As much as I love Sram. Their cranks won't be anywhere near my race bike. I have ridden rival cranks though, and never has the shifting issues some complain of. They, are just heavy, cheap looking, and feeling. Same goes for Red, and Force in my opinion. FSA all the way.

What's cheap feeling about them? Are they not stiff?

The SRAM Force crankset is a good piece of kit.

No shifting issues and they're plenty light. And they're stiff enough, even for my 210 lbs self (stiffer than my Ultegra aluminum cranks).

Oh, I think they look quite nice too

I am using the full Rival Kit with the exception of the brakes, which were not in stock when I bought. The Rival crankset works fine. I have no shifting issues at all. I love the performance.

The only problem I have had with the group is the finish comes off. The cranks look pretty beat up now and the shifter finish is wearing off quickly. Everything works great but it looks pretty bad now.

The compact SRAM cranks shift pretty good. The standard cranks I thought were kind of poor. SRAM's bottom bracket kind of sucks.. the bearings arent very good. Thats the one upgrade that Id consider making. I switched my bike back to Force and Im happy with all the components. The BB had a ton of drag to it, tho so I upgraded that piece. Everyhing else is standard Force.

I thought SRAM acquired a crankset maker in order to sort this issue out, right?

SRAM cranks are made by Truvativ, who is owned by SRAM.

FSA?
Campagnolo now makes a Centaur carbon crank. The alloy one is shinier though, and probably around the same price as rival. Rival is expensive for a relabelled Truvativ!

I also like Sugino cranks. You could try an Alpina or Cospea. Stronglight alloy cranks are ace also.

I have a Force Crank, on one of my rides, and find it stiff , durable and reliable. 2k miles no creaks or problems. One of the Board sponsors offers a ceramic bearing upgrade, but haven't found the need to do so yet. Is there a big difference between force and rival? I know the force comes in at 660 gms. including BB, and FSA forcelight comes in at 630 gms , record at 643. Just a guess, but the difference wouldn't win a race
