Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tubs for clincher wheels?

At the LBS today- I came across a Tubular tyre for clincher wheels- Anyone any experience of these? I am thinking of the S22's

https://www.tufonorthamerica.com/tires/pro.php

I have a few qualms- They do not seem to be exceptionally light- Punctures are repaired by some form of "GOO" that will add weight when used- and I do not like the worry of Punctures. And they are not particularly cheap.

Think I will be staying with the PR2's that are on the other bike when I replace my current worn out tyres on the Boreas.

Open tubulars are sew ups that are opened up and a bead added. High TPI. I ride vittoria open tubulars. Very nice ride.

The tufo ones look like they're still sew ups, with the bead added as a separate piece underneath for attaching to a clincher rim. Never tried them before though.

That a brilliant concept. All the the disadvantages of tubulars with almost none of the weight savings. Who thinks of this stuff?

I cut the beads off of clincher tires, sew innertubes inside and glue them to tubular rims.

Tufos suck. Run, do not walk, away. They are heavy, roll like sh*t and like PCad said, have all the bad of a tubie...

Clement made a "tubular clincher" back in the 1980's called the Evolution. It didn't seem to catch on. I have one in the basement that's still unused. I should try it one day (or sell it on Ebay as vintage)

I think they are going to stop making the tufo clincher, or at least the cross version. Lots of complaints about people rolling them off the rim.

+1. However if you price them at $300, have large graphics and say 'carbon' somewhere, people will buy
