Just arrived in Los Angeles, looking for info, some Q's
Hi, I am here for 1 week arrived today in LA.
Last week I met a chap (very quickly mind) I think his name was Tony or Anthony. He was in Sydney for the World Master Track Titles (35-39 age group).
I mentioned to him about some riders I have seen in Main St, Santa Monica or Venice? and the ride up and down the coast. He was from the area.
I have seen the Southern Cal forum before, maybe someone linked to it and maybe you need to be a member. But I am after some info to meet up this weekend I hope.
THank you in advance.

Probably Anthony Galvan. I think he lives over in the West LA area. To figure out rides you probably want to talk to the people at Helen's in Santa Monica or Westwood. I think ther is a Tues. and Thurs. morning ride over there somewhere.

Not really, actually. People from outside the state have no idea how "extensive" the fires are. Case being, yes, it's 7 counties - but unlike a lot of states, California has a sh*t load of counties. All over the state?? Hardly. There are no fires north of San Luis Obsipo - everything is in Southern California and the majority of fires are on the 'fringe' of suburbanity - being that the fires are occurring at the very edge of recent land developments, which are comparatively far away from anything worthwhile. Yes, houses are burning - bummer. 10,000 people evacuated? That's actually a small number - and it's only the people who live way the hell out there, near where the fires are burning.
Malibu? That area burns down more often than Lindsay Lohan does drunken text messaging on her way to rehab.
San Bernandino area? Burns more often than you think.
This sorta thing happens often around here - but it is only getting major news now because many fires are going at once. There's a reason the native americans used to call this land the "Land of a Thousand Smokes"

sky looks crazy now.
Thanks, I will go and check at Helens when I have some time. The guy was racing in Sydney last week, so I could find his name I guess in the results. the were not really that many in that age group from the USA. The guy was riding a few years ago for I martin?helens so they would be the ones to ask too. Just thought of that really, long flight and no sleep.
Lots of real bad bushfires in Asutralia too. I am used to it.

Thanks for the reality check, Prendrefeu. A classic example of how misleading news stories can be.

Yeah, the fires are all on the fringes, but are having major impacts on a lot of the best riding areas in SoCal, and the air quality is bad enough that most of the folks on the SoCal forum are bagging their rides until at least Thursday or Friday. My house is nowhere near any of the fires, but my lungs are aching and eyes watering just sitting around. However, they seem to be getting most of the fires closest to LA under control.
And, the latest estimates are over 500,000 evacuated in San Diego & OC. Things are much worse down there than in LA, though.
